Hull are rumoured to be on the brink of administration, if they did go under, that would mean just one place up for grabs. Which is an absolute buggger as I so want Wet Spam to go down.

When is this game/league going to implode, can the owners, CEO’s, Chairmen, Premier League, FA, FIFA and especially the main culprits the players not realise that this level of debt building is not sustainable and that something is going to give.

How do players justify £5million+ wages, clubs cannot afford them and they certainly are not worth it. I don’t think they are worth £1million a year in wages but at least if they are capped there, the game won’t implode. Make them and their agents cream it of the sponsorships like they do in other sports, not from the clubs.

I know its a bit different, but when I worked at a radio station the DJ’s were telling me about how much they got paid and the actual job at the station only accounted for about 20% of their total income.

Their wage wasn’t the biggest earner for them it was the fact that they were at Radio X that gave them their name and they used that to get the gigs that paid the bigger money.

That is how football should work, give them the sub £1 million wage and let them and their agents go out there (i.e. do their job) and source the extra money from sponsorship, event/shop openings etc, using the name of their club, country or league they play in/for.

I agree, something is going to give and it will take a United or a Liverpool going bump for something o be done, it will then be too late.

FA Cup Winners 2013, sounds good that

How do you work out that the players are the main culprits???

IMO there is (at the top level) a vast amount of money swilling round in football. Its not as evenly spread out as it should be but, after using it to reduce ticket prices, I’d rather see that go to the people who earn it (players & managers) than fat cat directors. The players are (quite rightly in my opinion) asking for their share of the wealth they’re creating.
If Hull go into administration then the only people to blame will be the directors – anyone with half a brain could tell that paying the likes of Jimmy Bullard a rumoured £50k+ a week on top of the transfer fee was not only a bad idea but unsustaiable. When they had their bid accepted by Fulham & Bullard asked for that amount they should have said no chance & left the meeting
Other clubs should do likewise & wages would soon be driven down
Its called cutting your cloth accordingly

I used to be quite blinkered and wanted decent players at Wigan, regardless of cost. This season has opened my eyes and I now appreciate the job Dave Whelan has done here. There will always be clubs willing to pay an extra million for a player or an extra few grand in wages, the only way to put a stop to this is to have some kind of salary cap and a cap on a clubs annual spending. Nobody is worth £250,000 a week.

“Nobody is worth £250,000 a week”

the thing is though that the clubs who pay anything like those wages (United, Chelsea & City) can afford to either coz they make an operating profit or coz they have multi-billionaire backers. If they can afford it then there should be no problem with whatever they get paid.

The problem is (IMO) the clubs who don’t have that amount of money, paying it in the hope that it’ll bring them success & increased revenue

If you cap United to spending a maximum amount in wages on a player & their profits leap what do you want them to do with the money??
The responsibility for managing a clubs budget comes down to the owners &/or directors. If they can’t afford it then they shouldn’t pay it. if they do pay it & come unstuck then its their own fault

They could start to pay their debts off !

But basically TL, I do agree with what you’re saying

Call me crazy but why doesnt the Premier League enforce a maximum salary cap of £25,000 (for instance) per week, per player.
Then if clubs, who are self sustainable (on an honest income), and not dependable on wealthy owners, then the figure should be revised.
Obviously that would isolate the so called lesser teams from the ‘big four’ or maybe even a few more as it has now become but you wouldn’t have clubs going to the wall like most seem to be doing.
It would also make the transfer market a bit more competitive, as clubs now regularly beat other clubs to players merely on the fact that they pay ridiculous wages, when they cant afford to do so, in an attempt to get success early.
Yes, i know we suffer but tell me how this would actually change for us. I cant see us paying too many of our current crop above that £25,000 (i may be wrong, i dont know) and we dont blow millions on transfer fee’s. We merely cut to our cloth because we are on a low income budget. Whatever your opinions are of Whelan, he has had this spot on all along. Yes, we may have got lucky on a couple of occasions by staying in the league but its due to his business sense mixed with good fortune (and some bloody good bargains).
But surely, if the league does adopt a similar appraoch i can only see the division becoming more competitive, which is what all the proper fans really want.
Its not a massive overhaul but more transparency from clubs regarding their financial situations. We would never beat a club like, Man City, Man Utd, Chelsea to a player but on the flip side of it, we would stand a bloody good chance competing with others in the division that are enforced with the salary cap, much like ourselves.

Agree with most of what’s been said. If someone cant live on £25,000 a week then there is something wrong. Fifa need to impose this and it will make clubs richer, players more comitted, the lower leagues would be fantastic, (bit like us in the old 3rd when any team could get into the play-offs) and the F.A Cup would be fantastic, especially for the non league teams. Platini will try to enforce something like this soon because he hates this league. To be honest so do i. On another note, If it’s true about Hull then you can almost guarantee any club that comes up and a few clubs already in this league will slash their wage bills dramatically, So we have a good chance of staying here for a while yet. I bet the Premier League and Sky didnt think about all of this crap when they created the league.

With all the money in the game, I would rather the players got it as they provide the entertainment, if you cap at £25k a week then the chairmen will make all the money and drain it out of the clubs. Dont think that the fans would benefit as they wouldnt, they never did in the 60’s and 70’s.

Salary caps will only work if it is EU wide, which they cant do because of free trade. Even the transfer window could be banned if challenged under EU law, restriction of trade.

Maybe the premiership should look at their own fit and proper rules for ownership first, Portsmouth didnt exactly look solid when bought over 3 times this season !

How about his fro a revolutionary thought.

The money dragged in by TV is filtered to all the teams in the Football Leagues, maybe even further than that.

How about every team in the Premier League gets the same amount of money, remember this doesn’t include the sponsorship deals done by the clubs. The rest can filter down the leagues to make sure that Chester, Accrington, Bury etc doesn’t happen.

This could in turn develop more English talent and therefore help the national team. Some of these players forget their roots when they’re earning big bucks, I can’t beleive a few of the ex-players couldn’t club together £26,000 to save Chester.

Let the players agents earn their crust with the personal sponsorship and the clubs on merchandise etc…

Yes the players provide the entertainment, but not to the extent that it sacrifices the Club and the game – some clubs are operating a 85%+ of income in wages, ask anybody in business if that is sustainable.

I am just airing thoughts because something has to be done….

There used to be a far more even distribution of wealth within the game.
For a start an away team always got a cut of the gate receipts for a league game (pretty much like they do for the FA cup still) but now they get nowt
The TV money (when it was far, far less) was always distributed far more evenly throughout the leagues until the top flight clubs argued that they deserved a bigger share of the pie as it was in reality their product (& not the lower leagues that everybody wanted to watch). The FL refused so the FA formed the premier league
There aint a cat in hell’s chance now that that will be reversed as the clubs in the top flight would argue that a loss of income would cripple them & why should that happen to protect the Chester City’s of this world

What (IMO) has made the premier league even worse is the vast amount of money that qualifying for the champions league brings into a club. Those clubs in the top 4 always tended to be the wealthier ones anyway & when you chuck extra millions & millions at them like they have it only makes the gap between them & the rest of their domestic league even bigger. And guess what happened several years ago when those clubs said they weren’t getting enough of a slice of the TV deal for the champions league?? They threatened to form their own breakaway league & UEFA chucked even more cash at em
