So here we go again. Nearly already resigned to another relegation battle. Pathetic.

Wigan manager Roberto Martinez has predicted that the next few Premier League games will be key in establishing whether his side can look beyond another relegation battle this season.

Despite only having played five league games, Martinez thinks the forthcoming batch of fixtures will mould the Latics’ season, and wants to build on their positive result in the Capital One Cup.

Wigan beat West Ham 4-1 on Tuesday night, and the Spanish manager wants to use the result as a springboard to positive results in their upcoming fixtures.

The club face Sunderland on Saturday followed by Everton, Swansea and West Ham.

“You can work and work at things and aspects in football and spend hours on physical, technical and tactical areas of your team but nothing gives you that strength that a winning feeling gives you,” Martinez said.

“We don’t want to be a team that just fights against relegation, we want to be a team to do something else, and that means the next few games are vitally important.

    Quotes of the week
“I would say that looking at the start of the season it’s been a good start, without being an excellent start from a points point of view.

“I’m very happy with the competition for places and with the look the squad has at the current time and I’m very much looking forward to the next three or four games.

“I do feel that this is probably the strongest squad we’ve ever had at Wigan Athletic since I’ve been here in terms of the quality we have got and it’s our unique opportunity to be tested.

“To make seven changes and go to such a difficult ground as Upton Park and win a football game but not just that but scoring four goals and showing the type of control we had. It’s very pleasing.

Wigan are currently 15th in the Premier League after taking four points from their opening five games.

this season was alaways going to be a relegation battle. we are battling to stay in premier league. therefore a relegation battle.

What are your expectations for this season Yosser?

      I disagree Area.

With the form shown in the second half of last season a comfortable mid table finish was and is not out of the question keeping flirtation with the relgation zone to a minimum.

Anything else would for me be considered a step backwards from the brilliant football we have shown ourselves capable of producing.

Obviously there can be a number of factors that will influence that outcome over the course of a season so no need to panic.

But having said that I dont see what Roberto has said there to indicate he is resigned to a relgation battle.

I think it is plainly obvious that the next few games will shape not only ours but every other teams season as this is the time of year the table really starts to tell the story of who can expect to be battling in what part of the table.

Only time will tell and I dont think its been as bad of a start as some people on here would have you believe.

But then again these are the same people who seem to p*ss and moan for the sake of it.

you disagree with me disagreeing with yosser, well i disagree with you

no seriously though,, i think losing hugo and diame was always going to impact on our strength in depth and i think we benefitted from the first 11 knowing they had quality sat on the bench waiting to step in.

the back end of last season was indeed a run of epic proportions. looking at it though we did have a little luck on our side and under those circumstances we played very well. That didnt automatically give us a target of mid table finish. Id love us to be challenging for that but when all is said and done… avoiding relegation (all beit alittle more comfortable than last few seasons) in my eyes is still our main goal.

my initial grip though was with it being pathetic that we should be involved in a relegation battle. a little cockey maybe on some fans part.

Sorry Area I should of been clearer.

I just disagree that a relegation battle should be considered anywhere near our objectives this season.

I know the constraints we face as a club and I have defended Martinez’s actions and results on this basis a number of times.

But after 3 years to assemble the squad which he is very happy with (and so am I) now is the time to push on.

No doubt the club would of been sold to Kone on this basis and we all know we have the team has the potential to acheive this goal.

If we are not 100% committed that we are to reach mid table then we may as well not bother trying IMO.

Not my expectations, it’s the club’s. They were making good noises in the summer about mid table finished etc. They should back statements like that up. Im happy with the signings made and you all know where i feel we are weak. Im still confident about a comfortable finish this season don’t get me wrong but telling everyone we are going for a top 10 finish like some club personnel did in the summer seems a bit of a red herring to get more bums on seats.

I don’t really know what im getting at, I’m just sick of official club statements like that about avoiding relegation every year because we are such a small club. Anyone would think we were an amateur side. Other clubs don’t do it, We should say we are going to be competitive and confident about a higher league finish. Doesn’t instill much confidence reading the same old stuff. That compiled with the performances starting to take a familiar route.

        Where’t the piece from?

To me it looks like Maretinez has been asked something like ‘You’re close to the relegation zone again, so do you expect to be fighting relegation again this season?’, and he’s answered:

“We don’t want to be a team that just fights against relegation, we want to be a team to do something else, and that means the next few games are vitally important.’

I think his response is a positive intent to try and progress from last season.
