Was going down really that bad for the club ? A rough calculation based on losing say 5000 each home game would have us losing roughly £2.5m on gate receipts a season. Knock off roughly £500,000 for the increase in a season ticket cost and I reckon that circa £2m is the deficit. Now with parachute payments in the region of £12m a season for 4 seasons that leaves £10m extra for wages etc, now that aint all that bad is it ? Or is it ? Discuss ! :S
11 July 2013 at 3:47 pm #117686Why will we lose 5,000 a game?
Loads of more local games, and on the assumption that we start being more competitive (a big assumption, I accept) I don’t think we’ll lose that many home supporters.
I in fact think our average attendance could be up.
11 July 2013 at 4:41 pm #117688I wouldn’t quit your day job just yet Phil but in summary I don’t think it is that bad compared to the plight of QPR for example.
Wages seem the biggest factor in this and thankfully the clubs contingency plan included significant wage drops in line with the clubs drop in income.
While you can’t give Martinez all the credit for this as the majority has to go to the likes of Jackson and Whelan I do have a little bit of thanks to him in that he left us in a position where we don’t have to fear if we will ever not have a club to support once Whelan passes on.

8,000 renewals already isn’t too bad at all!
11 July 2013 at 5:23 pm #117694It’s the television rights that make the difference.
I’d expect attendances next season to be around 12,000.

I hope that is just Wigan fans.
11 July 2013 at 5:43 pm #1176998,000 renewals already – that’s very good. We do need a good atmosphere.
But there won’t be many fans coming from Bournemouth and Yeovil – though there may be as many as came from Fulham.
The local derbies should compensate, especially if any of the clubs are towards the top of the table.

Discuss ! :SLast season Latics got £38.5mill in TV money from the Premier League which is made up of the same flat fees every club got £32.7mill + extra based on how many times they featured in the Sky live game
Whilst I don’t know the exact amount each FL club gets from the TV deal, the whole package is less than double at £65mill per season (between 72 clubs) that Latics received last year so it will be buttons in comparison. Even when you add on the £12mill parachute payment you are looking at a drop in income from TV deals alone (advertising & corporate revenue will now fall too) of about £20mill.
So yes, finaancially, getting relegated was that bad for the club – thankfully due to the financial management of Dave Whelan & Jonathan Jackson (not Martinez – he merely operated within the financial parameters he was set & IMO deserves praise for keeping Latics competitive in the face of some quite drastic cost cutting) it is not as bad as it could be12 July 2013 at 2:54 pm #117732I know that we are worse off compared to being in the Prem. What I meant was, it’s not the end of the World so to speak and that we should be ok financially for a while yet ! Between 12000 and 13000 is a realistic average home gate for this coming season !
