A rainy day in “sunny Southport” has forced another pointless post to break the monotony of posts about how we’re going down and how our new signings are terrible. So to distract all the deluded people who forget that the season is 38 games long, not one, here’s my 2nd pointless post in as many days.

Everyone has their own opinions on players, quality means nothing if the player doesn’t work enough, but work rate is useless if a man can’t kick a ball. These things will be forgotten in this post, just about whether you liked the player or not. Here is a few players I’d like opinions on:

Jason Jarrett – if anyone read my last post they would see I hated him, other people disagree, your opinions?

Michael Brown – Never afraid to get stuck in, perhaps a little too much! Rare to see him go a game without a yellow. Seemed to care more about tackling people than playing football half the time. I do like him, mainly for hitting Martin Keown mid-interview with a ball for Leeds!

Alan Mahon – Cracker against Villa, another player I liked, but sometimes very frustrating.

David Wright – From what I remember he was pretty good, Eaden came and took his place but think he had more in him. And while I’m on the subject…

Nicky Eaden – Another player I mentioned on my last post. Should have been a wing back. Had something against him, didn’t think he could defend. Dislike the man!

Graham Kavanagh – Few people slated him, I liked him. Thought he worked hard, it was either because of that or because I felt sorry as he looks like my dad!

Josip Skoko – Had a soft spot for him, not sure why. Not great but tried!

Henri Camara – Pace was a real handful for most defences. His shooting was not. Tantrums annoyed me a lot but could change a game. Mixed feelings!

Nathan Ellington – Some people are bitter, but the man could finish. If I could pick any striker we’ve ever had to have a 1-on-1 with the keeper, it would be him. Him and Roberts are still our best strike partnership ever. Lethal. Loved him.

Had a chat with another Latics fan in work and he felt different, any views? Or who were your favourite/least favourite players?

My first football ‘hero’ was Bobby Campbell. It was his bustling style, he would quite often dive in where it hurt to score goals, and quite frequently ended up in the net with the ball. A REAL Centre-forward of the old school.

And then there was Andy Liddell. The guy always gave 110% for us and scored some cracking goals. I only wish he’d been at the club a little later, as I feel he could’ve been great for us in the Premiership. The nearest we have to him now is probably Shaun Maloney. Similar style.

Also Arjan De Zeeuw. What a player. What a bloke. In two spells, he sweated blood for us. A real Latics legend.

        AS FOR PLAYERS I HATED…….

I’m not sure ‘hate’ is the right word. I really ‘hate’ Ian Brady. I really ‘hate’ Ian Huntley, but that’s another topic……

I was frustrated as hell by Jason Koumas. More the fact that you just KNEW he had ability, but that for whatever reason he was reluctant to really show it, and we paid £5 million for the ‘priviledge’. Not good.

Kapo was absolute garbage, and Marcelo Moreno never looked like scoring. Mido was a waste of time as well….and as for Zaki, the guy had an opportunity most of us would die for….and wasted it. By all accounts, he comes from a fairly wealthy background…..so perhaps he was in no dire need to ‘earn his fortune’…..that absolutely frustrates me.

Leigh Jenkinson…..now….oh my, he was a one trick pony who did several stepovers before usually running the ball out of play.

No, I don’t think I’ve ever hated a Wigan player. I’ve really disliked Steve Senior when he left us and played for Preston and was gesticulating ‘staying down’ to us at Deepdale, circa 1990. But as for my own teams players…..no, I’ve never hated.

Andy Liddell is, and probably always will be, my favourite Wigan player. Sheer class. One of the few players I believe would have been able to cope in the premiership from our past.

Lyons, Campbell, players like that were all before my time. I only have stories to go off, so I cannot comment on them.

Arry was possibly one of the most loved Wigan players. No other player had the entire stadium wearing their country’s colours as they were leaving. True legend.

I had a soft spot for JK, I think the crowd getting on his back effected his confidence but he did have the ability to be a lot better.

Couldn’t agree more with the rest, left them out as I think everyone disliked them! Same with the ones you liked, I think they were unanimously loved by supporters.

Diouf has to be up there with the most hated players by me. Spitting at Arry while he was at Bolton (of all clubs). Despite Arry being at Portsmouth he is still a fan favourite. All credit to Bolton for dealing with it well and punishing him to the maximum allowed. Not like Liverpool with the Suarez incident.

Good post mate, appreciate the input!

          Simon Haworth was frustrating.

He scored some great goals if he didn’t have time to think and just react instinctively. But if he had time to think he went to pieces.

And then to prove that he really was a Bear of Little Brain he left in the circumstances he did. “Doing the Ayatollah” while in a Latics shirt was unbelievable. I was stood next to Paul Jewell that day – he was livid.

Scored our first goal at the JJB if I remember right? Did score a few crackers but I couldn’t agree more. His brain was his own worst enemy. Didn’t half love running though, eh? ;)

Was actually considering putting him on the list, on his day he wasn’t too shabby, scored a fair few goals for us but I think you hit the nail on the head describing him as frustrating!

When did Haworth leave us? I really can’t remember.

To be honest, I’ve never really understood why people at Latics were so offended by him ‘doing the Ayatollah’. Seriously. Haworth is a Cardiff lad and I think he probably had a bunch of mates sat in the Cardiff end, if he was guilty of anything, it was perhaps naivety. I don’t know, perhaps I am missing something?

It never really bothered me, him doing that. His goal at Wembley in the play off final was a cracker, as were his goals at Wrexham in the Auto Windscreen semi-final. He had some real ability for a big lad.

              Absolute scum that man.

Was an interview with Arry not long ago where he said “Everyone was saying how great I was for not reacting when he did it but in all fairness I offered him outside after the game but he wouldnt come out of the dressing room…”

LOVE….andy liddell..true club legend, gave everything for wigan athletic.

…lee mcculloch..not our best player, but played everygame 100%, and that bolton goal will always stick with me.

…graeme jones..a bit controversial coz he was only here for a couple of years, but that season when he scored 30 odd goals, he was a proper goal machine and we havent really had one since.

roberto martinez…the 3 amigos kickstarted our rise from bottom division, to beating manchester united in a league match, and he was the my favourite player whilst he was with us.

                HATE…pascal chimbonda…a piece of sh#t

Chimbonda was something new. A defender that played ahead of the strikers. Unheard of! Always caught out of position but yet was bloody good at the same time. I am a bit bitter though, massive bar steward but I can think of worse for similar reasons!

The problem with the Ayatollah was that he was obviously unhappy being with us, wanted to move on and hadn’t really been putting a shift in for a while.

Come the Cardiff game when their fans started applauding him (which our fans (and management) took to imply that they could see he wasn’t really trying that hard) started to annoy people. Then we he did the Ayatollah in acknowledgement of their chants and applause that was just too much.

He wasn’t signalling to a few mates, he seemed to be saying that he didn’t want to be with us and that he was a Cardiff lad at heart.

He left in February 2002 to Tranmere, where to our great delight he got sent off against us at Prenton Park in September of that year.

Im a big fan of Simon Haworth. Looking back on the goals he scored. He was definately gifted. For me he represented the first step up in player transfers from days of pre whelan. if im correct aprox 400-500k from coventry. at the time big money. and boy did he repay us.

The cardiff thing never bothered me one bit. he is in fact a cardiff fan, born and bred. why not show a little pride in what he loves. However the latter end of his career did turn a bit sour, and that was a shame for me. As if he could have been a real legend for us. someone mentioned ellington and roberts as best forward line up. I think, for the postion we were in and the impact it made, the combo of Liddell,Haworth and Barlow will always stick in my mind. Good times.

I miss that sense of ownership that you get from being a fan. Nowadays, with the premierleague, we seem to turn up and go home and no-one bothers. it never used to feel like that. cant put my finger on it, but something just isnt right with the game today.

The thing is, if you look at his time at the club, was it 1999-2002? It must have been an extremely frustrating time to be at our club. He played under how many managers during that time? Mathias (I’m thinking back to the Autowindscreens run and final), Benson, Rioch, Bruce, Jewell….well that’s five there, not counting caretaker managers. It must’ve been extremely frustrating to be at the club during those times, very difficult to build a relationship with a manager. And perhaps that’s why he seemed to lose interest.

I would say that the disappearance of terraces is to blame for that personally.
