Would you see a Cup run now as a springboard to get a run of results going, or a distraction?
10 December 2014 at 3:48 pm #136724Two strikers and a positive approach may do that. Or let’s just keep it His majesty Griff’s way and play one striker with his back to the goals.

Or let’s just keep it His majesty Griff’s way and play one striker with his back to the goals.Even though it’s probably fair to say that I am way ahead of you and Horc in the pecking order when the time comes for a rank amateur to take over the reins, as yet, it still isn’t me who actually picks the team. That’s still Malky, Rosler before him and Martinez before him that went for the one up front option.
Now, at the risk of repeating myself for the umpteenth time (which clearly I have to do for some of the seemingly terminally intellectually challenged on here) I am actually not against playing with two strikers, just not in a 442 because I think we would get mullered through midfield.
All you have ever done, however, is constantly say we should play two up front (though thankfully you have stopped short of saying it needs to be a big un and a little un) without ever addressing the perfectly reasonable reservations other people have raised with playing that system. That said, I think it onoly right that we avoid letting you pose your “why not 442” question directly to Malky because when he asks you to elaborate on exactly how you see it working in detail, the thousand yard stare, embarrassed silence and spittle dribbling slowly down your chin that would inevitably follow would be far too awkward for all concerned to bear.
10 December 2014 at 4:31 pm #136733The most widely used formation in international football is 4-2-3-1 and the top clubs in Europe have been using variations of 4-2-3-1 over the past decade. In the Champions League ,with the exception of Barcelona and Manchester United in recent years, all finalists have used a 4-2-3-1. Inter in 2010,Chelsea in ’12 and Bayern Munich in ’13,all have played with their own interpretation of the 4-2-3-1 and won the Champions League.
That can’t be right. Martinez invented this 1 up front rubbish, and everyone knows you’ll never win owt unless you have two strikers.

To be fair, the way we are playing it at the moment isn’t working. But I think that says more about the ineffectual three behind the lone striker than anything else.
So, going with something different is worth a shot. That said, we tried playing with 2 strikers a few weeks and had all of about 0 shots on target if I recall correctly. hard to remember, I think I was asleep for most of it.

I still wouldn’t mind seeing a 3-5-2, and as said yesterday, I’d play McManaman as one of the strikers.11 December 2014 at 5:57 pm #136779Maybe it’s too early for Malky to be able to answer this but I do wonder:
What went wrong over the summer?
Could part of the trouble be the amount of players coming to the end of their contracts?
Were they told that there was going to be a clearout?11 December 2014 at 7:02 pm #136781Bearing in mind the current league position, would 4th bottom do for this season?
11 December 2014 at 7:43 pm #136790The way we play this one striker system 4th bottom will be a massive over achievement this season Makem!
