I can see Scharner staying as i cant see that “big club” coming in for him can you?He was available in the last window like everybody else and would have commanded a smaller fee so i was surprised that no bids came in for him.
His “big club” will probably be one like Dulham or Stoke (excuse me me while i laugh!) rather than a big four club. Why move sideways to clubs that have probably peaked anyway?
He seems to like it at Wigan and i think Scharner has been a good player on the whole and a good player to have in the squad.
There are plenty of other permier league teams that Scharner could play in the first XI for – as a centre half
Ironically I think he’s blown any chance he ever had of a move to a bigger club by his public insistance that he’s a midfielder (& Bobby’s willingness to take him up on that)
That said he’ll leave in the summer (like someone else said to a club like Fulham) but I wasn’t surprised no-one came in for him in January – why pay £1mill or so now when you could have him for nowt in June?
EDIT – Et voila http://www.mirrorfootball.co.uk/news/Tr … 65697.html
Although that could very well just be his agent releasing a story in a “play him or else” kind of way like happened with McCulloch when he wasn’t recalled to the starting line up after an injury (& during which time Jewell had signed Kilbane)
Scharner is one of those players who tries but never seems to get it right. A bit above himself, and always reminds you of the lad a school who always thought he was better than the rest.
As long as we replace him with quality then let him go and reduce the wage bill.
Mario, been a good servant to the club and no doubt was able to draw other players here, but looking too old now and although he has class, again need to replace with quality.
Mario isn’t the player he was. Boyce is looking better, both defensively and going forward at RB
I’d keep Scharner for versatility, and he’s a better centre half than Caldwell if he can be persuaded to play there
I think Scharner would be disruptive if he stayed just as a squad player and so, much as I don’t like us reducing the size of the squad, let him choose his preferred club and I’ll drive him there myself.
They would, of course, be able to offer him big bucks as there is no transfer fee; bucks bigger than Whelan is ever likely to offer. And if we really wanted him to stay, there would already be an offer on the table and to the best of my knowledge, there isn’t.

I wouldnt say Fulham was a sideways move.
(kind of Fulham related…friend is club doctor for Watford and been a Fulham fan since a small kid, he got a call on the morning of the Juve game asking if he could step in for the evening…I saw him on the bench with the biggest grin ever. Lucky git)
I dont think Id be too bothered if Scharner left, he did a good job for us. Good, not great and as long as we bring someone else in, younger maybe with a bit more hunger to actually show his talent instead of talking a good game we’ll do ok.
“Callejon is not an out and out goalscorer and has scored only two goals so far this season. However, he is widely recognised for his overall contribution, including his ability to set up goals and bring others into the game”
We are now opening the pre-registration criticisms from the unhappy clappers of the forum.. still he will be a step up from Scotland
