Roberto Martinez reckons Paraguayan centre-back Antolin Alcaraz could turn out to be an inspired signing.
Alcaraz joined from Brugges last month where he made almost 70 league and 16 European appearances for the Belgian club.
Latics fans will be able to see the 27-year-old in the World Cup this summer after he was selected for Paraguay’s final squad.
REAL HURRY
And Wigan manager Martinez, who describes Alcaraz as “a highly versatile defender with great awareness and distribution”, is delighted to have captured him ahead of their rivals.
“For me, the biggest one was to get Antolin Alcaraz signed,” he said.
“He was a free agent, he was going to the World Cup, and as a result we had to get that done in a real hurry.
“And I am quite happy with how things are progressing behind the scenes regarding the other targets we have in mind.”
Experienced duo Mario Melchiot and Paul Scharner are poised to leave the DW Stadium but Martinez in unconcerned.
“Even though Mario and Paul brought huge experience, we have still got players there who can help the youngsters,” he said.
“But more importantly we are looking to the young players to adapt to the situation and be ready to fulfil their roles on the pitch and in the squad.”
