CHELSEA MEMORY ONE OF GAFFER’S BEST
Posted on: Thu 01 Oct 2009

Martinez hails DW atmosphere and stresses importance of fans

Roberto Martinez has had many found memories at Wigan Athletic, both as a player and a manager, but he describes Saturday’s win over Chelsea as one of the best.

The gaffer masterminded the win over the country’s in-form team, a result which will long be remembered at the club, and he spoke of how the atmosphere in the DW Stadium is the one memory that he’ll never forget.

“I’ve a lot of found memories at the club and Saturday’s win is certainly up there with the best of them,” said Martinez.

“Obviously playing in the Premier League is a fantastic achievement in itself, but when you beat one of the top-four, particularly Chelsea, and the form they are in, it’s special.

“We all know the quality they have and to beat them, and put on that kind of performance; putting together all the aspects we’ve shown so far into one game is fantastic.

“It’s great to have that in everyone’s minds for the rest of our career, because that’s the reason you’re in football.

“The atmosphere is the one thing that will stay with me from Saturday’s game.

“When you look at the West Ham performance and the reaction of the fans; how much they pushed and wanted the three points, and then again throughout the game against Chelsea, it was special.

“That chemistry between the players and the fans is key if we want to be successful this season, and they set the standards to how the DW Stadium should be in every Premier League game from now until the end of the campaign.”

Carlo Ancelotti himself said after the game how his Chelsea side had been ‘out-played’ and beaten by the better side, and the gaffer told of how the strength of character Latics have pushed them to victory.

He said; “We got into some really good positions all over the pitch, in some good two-on-two situations, and probably should have hurt them a little bit more.

“I think 1-0 down at half-time was quite flattering for Chelsea, but after that it was a case of knowing what to expect from them; we knew they were going to come at us, and we had to make sure that whatever happened it wouldn’t effect our performance.

“That was the key moment in our performance, not letting their goal effect our standards. We wanted to carry on our performance from the first 45-minutes until the end of the game.

“There are still little things we need to improve on, but fitness-wise I think we’re there now.

“Against Manchester United we had an excellent game for 60 minutes but couldn’t hold on to it, partly because of how fit we were.

“Now we have that intensity in our play and that’s been probably the hardest job we had on our hands. It’s difficult to reach those kinds of levels, but the intensity in our play is there, the understanding is there and the quality is obviously there.

“All we need is for the fans to get behind the players and the club and help us fulfil our potential and grow as quickly as possible.”

Sends a shiver down my spine reading what he has to say about our club, the guy is a true Wiganer, through and through. He’ll take us a long way, I remember meeting him for the 1st time when I was about 8 or 9 years old. A true gent, didn’t rush off, stayed chatting and asking about me and my brother. After the Blackburn game last season I told my brother Bruce won’t be here at the end of the season, I mentioned it on here a few times, i’ve never liked the fella myself and it seemed like he lost the respect of the players at the back end of last season. I also told him Roberto would be our next manager, he wasn’t too sure but I made it clear to him it WILL happen and i’m so glad I was right.

He is a true gentleman, loves the town and more importantly loves the club.
It is good to know that we have a manager that is proud that we won Chelsea, not just proud for his reputation but proud for the club and town just as we are.
I’m glad he mentioned the atmosphere because from where i was sitting in ES2 it was immense, i can’t remmeber the last time it was so good. I loved seeing the west stand get going and the kiddies in the south. My throat is still sore as f.u.c.k. .
Can anyone who sits in the west or south stands tell me what they thought of the atmosphere,am i going over the top or was it realy that good?

I couldn’t speak the day after.

We can forget any foolishness that has gone on before and just get behind the team now. All together.

Strikes me that this team is closer to the fans than for many years (probably a decade). There are no massive egos and all of them want to come over the give us a cheer. Special mention to Hugo, Titus, Mario and Kirky who always give us a clap.

I’ll have to go I’m getting emotional.

I sit in west stand and the atmosphere was very, very good. I saw the drummer boy walking back after the match and told him what a good job he was doing and how he even managed to get the west stand going. He hadn’t realised we could hear him, I think he’ll be beating the skins even harder next time :-)

              Progress

I’m in WS7, and we are usually a miserable bunch, but on Saturday, even the most dour folk around me joined in with the singing.

One of the happiest people I saw was the Egyptian doctor who sits on the row in front. When the final whistle went, he leapt into the air, and left ground high-fiving everyone along the row. Quality!

Great stuff, thats what i wanted to hear, Hopefully the west stand enjoyed themselves and will start getting behind the lads more vocally from now on, lets face it, it must be boring sitting there not chearing um on or owt, hopefully we can get new springfield rocking from now on.
