23 January 2012 at 12:43 pm #79190The players coming in look a lot lighter on the wage bill ;)
Also, I can only count about 5 of the players who left who are still playing at the highest level. Reckon quite a few of them are drawing their pension by now. Can’t imagine why he would have got rid of those.
I think those lists highlight perfectly why we are struggling now. It’s worth bearing in mind how we are on much more of a stable financial footing than we were.
If we had carried on going down the same road that we were a few years ago then, chances are, without very big cash handouts from someone (you know, Mr Tight ;) ) we would be struggling for our very existence at the moment, let alone struggling to stay up. When you look at it like that then getting relegated but having a sustainable club to enjoy in the future doesn’t seem so bad.
I’m not saying that Martinez is not making lots of mistakes, he quite clearly is, but it is not an easy job to manage Wigan. Do I think he could do better? Absolutely! But for now I think better the devil we know, who we know has the clubs best interests at heart, than employing someone who is only out for heightening their own reputation at the cost of the clubs finances. That’s if they’d even come
Take your pick people because you can’t have it both ways. Well you can but it’ll be more by good luck than it will good management. That’s unless we could get Wenger or Ferguson to come and do a shift for us!
23 January 2012 at 12:56 pm #79192I think everyone knows that Bobby has to manage off a significantly smaller transfer & salary budget than any of his Latics premier league predecessors.
That doesn’t excuse the insipid brand of football that he’s trying to get them to play nor the tactical or selection errors that he makes week after week – that comes about coz he makes poor choicesWith regards to a new manager coming in, i don’t agree with better the devil you know. Any new manager coming in would have to operate under the same budget constraints & so couldn’t bankrupt the club and I’ll take any manager who can see what’s staring them in the face as I believe that a manager with different tactics & selections could get that squad playing far better
And it happens, Martin O’Neill hasn’t spent a bean yet but new tactics, training etc.. have just got em somet like 5 wins in 7 gamesIf something’s broke, you try & fix it. IMO Bobby appears to be the thing that’s broken
23 January 2012 at 5:18 pm #79220I really don’t think it is an insipid brand of football though. I quite like what he is trying to do but for some reason (and this does come down to Roberto) things just don’t seem to be clicking. The concept is great but the reality is somewhat lacking. I just really hope that he somehow makes them click in the next few games and things start happening for us. Very frustrating to watch at times but if everything clicks into place it’ll be worth the frustration to have a club playing a brand of football that is not easy to achieve.
Fair play if you’d prefer someone else at the helm, that’s your opinion. I, personally, would rather struggle with someone who cares and who has a genuine passion for the club than be a “little” bit better with some long ball merchant who has our players kicking people off the park. Suppose it comes down to what you want out of supporting a football club. To me, Roberto is one of us and I will support him as such. I won’t have blind faith in him because, as stated earlier he has made a lot of mistakes, but I will give him a fair crack of the whip to get things right. He’s kept us up for 2 seasons with a dwindling budget so can’t be doing that badly, can he?
I’ve often pondered what supporting a club is and I still haven’t worked it out. It can’t be the players because they come and go. It can’t be anything to do with the stadium because that has changed and I’m still here. It’s definitely not the chairman. I don’t really care for the business side of it so it leaves me with just the memories of being taken by my Dad and the rapport with other supporters that has been built up with attending games. I guess, in that sense, I see Roberto as a fan and that is the reason I would like to see him succeed and am willing to give him more time.
It doesn’t really matter if we go down because it’ll still be my club and I can never change that. In it for good and bad no matter what. We have been spoiled in a way for the last few years but look back to where we came from, and where we might be heading again, it wasn’t that bad, was it?
Totally off topic now!

Totally off topic now!
It may be ‘off topic’, however, I believe what you have said encapsulates the feelings of the majority of supporters of our club. Indeed it a rough patch we are going through and finance, playing staff and possibly some boardroom decisions could be playing its part but regardless of the outcome at the end of the season we will still be a viable club with a long term future.
I too, am behind the (DW/playing/support) team and as I have said before (and alluded to by your goodself)some people choose to forget that there have been worse times in the past.
Eternal optimist that I am……I believe that we can win 8 out of our remaining games this season.
Off off topic now………regarding the finances I have just noticed that the game against Norwich has been changed for $ky and that this will be their seventhtelevised game this season – now there is some real TV money going into their club – would never happen at Little ol’ Wigan.

Apart from our first season in the Prem, when we were on Sky a grand total of 20 times!
