Well, our very own Roberto Martinez showed yesterday that he can tactically outclass a manager like Arsene Wenger.

At 2-0 down we were dead and buried BUT an inspired substitution by Roberto followed by 2 substitutions by Arsene and the game turned on it’s head and saw us score 3 goals in 10 minutes to win a very important game for both clubs.

This was a game neither could really afford to lose and we have won the battle.

I have been behind Roberto from day 1, I have always wanted to see him back at Wigan and I know he’s the man to take us forward. He has promised the fans big things and he admitted yesterday that it’s not been the best of seasons on the whole BUT we have shown glimpses of what we’re capable of. The word he often uses is consistency and i’ve no doubt it’s something he’ll be working on and trying to fix.

We can now try to finish the season on a real high and get back to back wins for the 1st time this season. The game at West Ham and at home to Hull are 2 winnable games and we should be looking at 4 points at least (although it’s not essential). The game at Chelsea can then be treated as a training session and you never know, pressure is on them, not us and we’ve beat them once already this season.

Well done Roberto and the whole team!

He didn’t tactically out class him at all. Wenger made substitutions because he thought he had won the game. Martinez brought on players to chase a game. Arsenal’s players took their foot of the gas. We finally go some things going our way in front of goal. Ergo, we snatched a totally unpredicatable victory.

I’m as supportive of Martinez as the next man but please don’t start making him into a tactical genius all of a sudden!

I never mentioned the word genius griff, i’m making my judgement from the last game, not any previous to that.

In our last game, our very own Roberto Martinez outclassed Arsene Wenger, it’s as simple as that. If a manager brings on 2 players and the team concede 3 goals after those subs it spells out bad management/judgement. Roberto brought on Moses who changed the game in a positive way and we ended up winning the game and deserved to win!

The stats show possesion was pretty even, we had more shots on target and off target, more corners and in the end more goals so, on the whole it was a win we deserved. If we didn’t get anything out of the game it would have been unfair BUT I wouldn’t have been dissapointed with the overall performance.

Fantastic management, fantastic effort and a fantastic atmosphere! What a great day!

I missed the first 10 minutes but I thought from then until the 79th minute Latics were awful & it showed everything that had been wrong with our season – no pace, no urgency, no movement off the ball, defenders & midfielders leaving players for somebody else to pick up, the ease with which Arsenal’s goals were scored etc.. In fact it got that easy for Arsenal that from 60 minutes it the game seemed like a pre-season run out – As such I’m quite surprised that the stats show things even in possession & us up on shots etc..

The first goal came from our best move of the match, Latics tails got up, Arsenal had taken their foot of the gas & found it hard to step it back up a gear & the rest is history

Like Griff though, regardless of stats, I wouldn’t say yesterday’s game were an example of Bobby outclassing Wenger at all. As the guy on Sky said “for 80 minutes Latics had looked less than threatening”. Also I wouldn’t say keeping the same formation, moving our biggest goal threat up front & putting a winger on the wing was inspired – just common sense

Anyway I’m gonna shut up coz I sound like a party pooper

The stats don’t lie, we were even on possesion and had more shots and corners.

We didn’t boss the game but we weren’t quiet and yes, we had chances. We had a couple of chances in the 1st half, Hugo coming close from a corner and a couple of shots on goal. Zog missed a sitter at start of 2nd half, Watson had a good shot saved, we had a header cleared off the line followed by some good defending by Arsenal plus the 3 goals followed in the last 10 mins.

Man for man on the day we were better/as good as they were, without a doubt and just for your information, bringing Moses on and changing the formation/moving players around is all down to the manager!

But he didn’t change the formation. Substituting players is not changing the formation.

Griff, you’re right, no change of tactics or formation, just a change of personnel – plus, what you said earlier –

“We finally got some things going our way in front of goal”.

            #30046

Alex – how does the saying go?
That’s it , “there are lies, damn lies & statistics”

that’s coz they can be used to show pretty much anything you want them too. For a start the stats showed that Latics played really well on Tuesday when in reality it was feckin awful

I know what I saw yesterday. I saw a team (Arsenal) in complete control of that game for 79 minutes without even getting out of second gear. Arsenal weren’t great, but they didn’t need to be. They’d also long since taken their foot off the gas before a great move saw us pull a goal back & then a combination of being unable to step back up a gear & Latics finally getting the bit between their teeth led to an amazing last 11 minutes that will live long in the memory

“just for your information, bringing Moses on and changing the formation/moving players around is all down to the manager!” – By that same token you could also argue the fact we were 2-0 down was also down to the manager due to his initial team selection. We looked far more threatening when he brought Moses on so why are you not criticising him for that???? Likewise you could argue Latics have been in a relegation battle for most of the season coz of the manager
You can’t have it both ways

            #30055

As I’ve said to you before Tyldesley, I hope that Martinez has been keeping Moses in cotton wool, as he’s been using this season to take stock (of his squad, the league, and possibly even himself), then he can start ‘properly’ next season.

Yesterday’s result was not due to a tactical master-stroke, more down to a couple of lucky breaks and a sudden bout of self-belief in the players.

            #30057

Finally realising your mistake is not tactical genius. We’ve always looked a better side with Rodallega down middle, and when Moses has been on the pitch. That should have been the formation/personnel from the start

Lets hope Watson gets a good run now. We need goal threat from midfield, and his set piece delivery is miles better than Zogs.

thats my friend is spot on! we’ve missed sum1 with a good delivery this season nzogbia’s not too bad but just by having sum1 who can take a good freekick is so much more of an advantage!

Still don’t actually think Watson is good enough… Just think he had a good game. On it Saturday?

Thought we were already consistent, consistently poor, and now your comparing him to Wenger and saying he outclassed him tactically!! Honestly, there are some jokers on here, yesterday was one of those freak results that happens from time to time (usually to other teams). Enjoy it while it lasts coz we will probably get beat in the next 2 games if the rest of the season is anything to go by.

I don’t think Watson has ever been given a long enough run to make a judgement. From what I’ve seen he’s at least as good as Thomas, and a better midfielder than Scharner. Add his goals and set piece delivery and you’ve got to say he deserves a run at least
