18 May 2013 at 6:20 pm #113806You wont get anywhere with Ye Olde One as he is drenched in blind faith ! My opinion of RM is that he can ready a team for a one off cup game but on the whole his league form does leave a fair bit to be desired ! My opinion mind ! I think he would make a decent national coach myself !
Blind faith ????
So eight years in the Premier League and the FA Cup was just a dream ???

I merely gave my opinion on RM with a little wind up as my opening gambit, nothing wrong with that ! By blind faith I meant that I have never read anything remotely negative or critical from Ye Olde Oak ! Takes it on the chin and reverts back to the late 70’s early 80’s for perspective every time ! As for the style of play RM has instilled into the team, the foundations are certainly there but the lack of pace to shift the ball through midfield and lack of firepower have been bereft for large parts of his tenure and I just thought that it would have been remedied by now ! The defense also made the same mistakes consistently and despite RM saying that they were naive at times and would learn, they didn’t ! I am thankful for 8 seasons in the Prem and 2 cup finals, one coming to fruition but on the whole it has been a bit of a struggle and a return to the Championship will be greeted with excitement and anticipation from yours truly ! :)

Fil, you are quite correct (for once!) when you say I revert back to the 70s and 80s for my perspective (60s as well) and therein lies the difference between us. I am an old fashioned “supporter” who loves my club and my football whilst you are of the newer breed who has bought into the Premier League/Sky franchise and all the tripe that goes with it. When MY team suffers I suffer with them; their pain is my pain. You and your ilk however are consumers who complain like hell when everything doesn’t go your way as if you were buying a second hand car.
I don’t apologise for my 60s, 70s and 80s perspective and don’t forget that I used to sit near you so I am only too aware of your perspective.
i.e leaving early and verbally abusing players when the product is not to your liking.

I will say this just one more time…I do not nor have I ever verbally abused any of our players ! Yes I have been known to leave games early but that is my prerogative is it not ! You have either got me mixed up with someone else re shouting abuse or you are just simply a bare faced liar ! I would like to think that it is the former !

20 May 2013 at 5:55 pm #113983Talking of stats there’s a lot of moaning about tippy-tappy football, lack of fire-power, too slow thro’ midfield etc. etc. Then there’s the comparison with Swansea, the fire-power of Benteke & Michu etc. et bloody cetera..
Well we scored 47 goals this season, same as Swansea & Villa
more than West Ham (45), Norwich (41), Stoke (34), Newcastle (45) & Sunderland (41) and of course more than QPR & ReadingThese facts seem to show very little wrong with us going forward. As has been repeatedly pointed out the problem has been in defence.
Dark-siders will say that’s cos Martinez is a clown
Light-siders will say that’s cos of injuries to defenders.Pays your money, have your moan but don’t let the facts get in the way.
20 May 2013 at 6:04 pm #113984Barcelona type, “play it from the back” football comes at a cost, you must be prepared to concede goals. Barcelona very rarely keep clean sheets but our 75 goals against is boardering on suicidal !!.
20 May 2013 at 7:24 pm #113986Said it numerous times not many defence injuries in september and still we were terrible

Exactly, it was Latics best top flight season in terms of going forward but if you’re going to need (on average) to score 2 goals every game just to get a point then you’re going down. Only United scored at a rate of 2+ a game on average
Where do I stand on what was to blame? On the fence – I don’t think the injuries helped in so much as Latics never got to play their strongest defensive line up & playing together does help partnerships develop, but playing behind a settled back line wouldn’t have stopped the countless times Al Habsi palmed shots straight back into the danger zone, or Figueroa & Robles messing about with it at the back against Spurs, or Caldwell giving the ball away to Swansea to let em back into the game, or Scharner getting just about nothing right in the game at Arsenal last week, or McArthur making a mess of a defensive header against Swansea he week before, or Scharner getting caught in possession at WBA to let em go 2-1 up, or only managing a point against 10 men QPR & on & on

To be fair, if we hadn’t had the injuries, Scharner wouldn’t have even been here to make those cock-ups

That was kind of what I meant by never being able to put out our strongest defensive line up out but injuries don’t excuse the fact that some of the errors made have no place on a schoolboy pitch never mind the top flight
Or as the last poster says the basic mistakes from Al Habsi
Injuries can be used to some extent but not so far as to absolve the management & individuals of blame20 May 2013 at 10:29 pm #114011Unbeaten in all cup games over 90 minutes this season goodpost
