Ex Wigan RL Chairman and love or hate him we Latics supporters of a certain age have to acknowledge his media spin and hard nosed business acumen almost sent Latics into oblivion and the ‘Rugby league town’ line is still being trotted out today especially with the national media.
He is perhaps the only chairman they have had to get Wigan RL national prominence for a very good period of time , something that has never been repeated since.
Whelan adopted the same tactics after he bought Latics in 1995 and turned it around massively and again whatever your thoughts about our old chairman we should be eternally grateful to him for that.R.I.P but I still have strong point of view regarding some of his comments towards our club. Lets not forget that, when we were going under (and we were) and the blanket was coming round we asked the Rugby could we ground share Central Park to give us some breathing space. Maurice Lindsey was one of the leading instigators as to why we never did. That kinda still gets stuck in the back of my throat not just me but alot of Latics fans of an age.
He could have been just as famous as been the guy who helped to sink our club.
