Well lets be honest, its always been Whelans policy, and this works – young developing players come to play for us with the promise by Whelan that If a bigger club comes along and its right for the club, he will give them his blessing to move. Its a great tactic I think, over time, he has become known for this, not only to us, but to players we are looking to sign – they will know he has done this before and is a man of his word, so I see this as a positive thing. its the only way we can survive by buying cheap and selling for a profit.. surely everyone can see this ?
28 August 2014 at 1:46 pm #133165Leicester City have had a second bid for Wigan midfielder James McArthur rebuffed.
However, City remain in the hunt for the Scotland international’s signature, the Mercury understands.
Reports suggesting City have agreed a £6.5m fee with the Latics for McArthur are wide of the mark.
City’s initial bid for McArthur, believed to be £5m, was rejected on Tuesday, and reports surfaced yesterday claiming Leicester had returned with an enhanced offer that had been accepted by Wigan chairman Dave Whelan.
It is understood that City did make an improved offer for McArthur, but their bid has again been rejected.
Whelan, however, appeared to confirm the deal had actually been done telling the Daily Telegraph: “Leicester came back in Wednesday morning and wanted a quick answer, it was all sorted out pretty quickly.”
The Mercury understands that does not seem to be the case.
City do remain interested in securing the services of McArthur, and the 26-year-old would bolster Nigel Pearson’s options in the middle of the park, where the club have been lacking depth following early-season injuries to Danny Drinkwater and Matty James.
McArthur would also bring Premier League experience to City’s midfield, having made 83 top-flight appearances with Wigan following his move from Hamilton Academical in 2010.
Following City’s 1-0 defeat to League Two side Shrewsbury Town in the Capital One Cup on Tuesday, Pearson said it was clear he needed to strengthen the squad.
But, the City boss had been sceptical about completing deals in the final week of the transfer window after a frustrating summer.
He said: “We continue to work to get players to strengthen the squad because I think one of the things that is apparent from Tuesday, when you look at the players having opportunities, is that we do need to strengthen.
“We need more depth. We will try to do that.
“Whether that is doable or not will be dependent on a number of things.
“People seem to think that it’s just recently we have been trying to do things but that is not the case.
“It has been a very frustrating summer for us. A lot of the targets we have been trying to bring in have not happened so you could look at this final week and say, ‘Well if you’ve not done it since May, it’s very unlikely you will do it now.’
“So I have got a very balanced view on whether we will get any deals done. If we do, good, and if we don’t, then I’ll have to deal with it.”

28 August 2014 at 2:13 pm #133173£6.5m I believe
As I said, put enough on the table and Whelan would sell you a kidney
Whelan never stands in any player’s way. The lad obviously wants to go, and why wouldn’t he?
So, good luck to him and well done to Whelan for getting a decent price.
Looking round at his fellow midfielders he must have thought ” Fuck this for a game of soldiers ” and he was gone ! :)
Watson, McCann, Cowie, hopefully Forshaw (can’t comment yet), Huws, Tavernier (if he ever gets a game) and even Espinoza are all good enough for a club of our standing and should be good enough to get us out of this league, and I have probably missed a couple there, too.
I accept that in Gomez and McArthur, our two best players have now left. But that’s what happens when you’re a medium-small sized second tier club with little resources to compete, wages-wise, with bigger clubs in the division and, of course, the Premier League.
28 August 2014 at 2:26 pm #133176I was referring to the midfielders that he has played along side so far this season! We miss McCann who in my opinion when fully fit is just as good as the 2 you mention if not better. He was just growing into the side when he got injured! Watson also is a shoe in on his return as he is better suited to this division and stands out a mile as one of the better players! Maloney is sorely missed as well and with those 3 and probably Forshaw the midfield will look pretty strong but so far it has been pretty non existent!
28 August 2014 at 3:32 pm #133182The lad wants to go, but why to leicester (or burnley for that matter). Chances are he’ll end up back in the championship next season.
28 August 2014 at 5:48 pm #133187The lad wants to go, but why to leicester (or burnley for that matter). Chances are he’ll end up back in the championship next season. At which point he can move again if he wants to, but he will have had another season of playing in the top league in the country and earning top league wages, too. Why on earth wouldn’t he move?
