Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur are reported to be interested in James McCarthy.
Martinez paid £15 million for him a year ago. Fans here thought that was far too much, and that McArthur was a better player. Now Manchester United apparently value him at £25 million.
Martinez has signed Barry on a permanent contract and has Gibson available again after injury. But if Everton did sell McCarthy, McArthur would be a natural replacement.
19 July 2014 at 6:14 pm #132424I think mcarthy will stay at everton this season
20 July 2014 at 5:24 am #132432I hope we had the sense to put a sell on clause in the contract.
20 July 2014 at 3:34 pm #132433McCarthy is an attacking midfielder while Mcarthur is a defensive midfielder and they both complemented each other on the field like twins even almost sharing the same name is an incredible irony.
Not sure Mcarthur is the same player without McCarthy and I’d be surprised to see a premier league club came in for Mcarthur other than to reunite him with his midfield partner.
INot sure McCarthy would go to Sackspur as they are a smaller club than Everton in my opinion although they do have delusions of being much bigger than they actually are but the lure of Man utd would be too big for any player especially with Van Gaal as
Seems to be a lack of interest for James Mcarthur although I heard rumours a while back that Burnley were interested in him which means we have a very good chance of keeping hold of him.20 July 2014 at 4:10 pm #132434Martinez has developed an individual style at Everton, with Barry and McCarthy playing as a defensive pair. Everton attack through the fullbacks Coleman and Baines, with Barry or McCarthy falling back to cover when one of them goes upfield.
McArthur would perhaps have been a more natural replacement for Barry than McCarthy. But Rosler has played him as an attacking midfielder and McArthur has shown he can fill that role too.
McArthur could provide cover for either Barry or McCarthy and I’m surprised, but not unhappy, that Martinez hasn’t come back for him too.
20 July 2014 at 4:51 pm #132435In my view McCarthur has become a better player since McCarthy left. He was up there with Gomez for player of the year last season.
McCarthy will never become the complete player until he eradicates those woeful misplaced passes. I’m talking the 15 to 20 yard ones when there’s no opposition player near him. He has everything else in his locker to become a top class player and will no doubt move to a bigger club in the next 3-4 years.
From Matlock to ManU
What a journey!20 July 2014 at 6:37 pm #132437I think that McArthur has emerged from McCarthy’s shadow too!
20 July 2014 at 6:44 pm #132438“Reports suggest that the Gunners are involved in a three-way battle with Manchester United and Tottenham for Everton’s Republic of Ireland international James McCarthy.”
