One of the headlines on News Now. Surely not.
19 April 2015 at 1:36 pm #141447One of the headlines on News Now. Surely not.The Newcastle United blog that reports this from the local Toon rag says:
It’s a Sunday so take these transfer stories linking players with the Magpies with a pinch of salt, and one of them is an exclusive in the Star today, which reports we are interested in signing James McClean, the former Sunderland winger, who is now at Championship side Wigan, who are second bottom of the Championship and could well be relegated this season.
The 25 times capped Irish International is hardly the caliber of player Newcastle fans will be expecting the club to sign this summer, but at least he would be fairly cheap, which is one parameter Mike Ashley values highly in the transfer market.
The reason the Star gives of why Newcastle may be interested is that Steve McClaren tried to sign the 26 year-old in January for Derby County, and he would be keen to get the Irish winger on Tyneside, should he accept the head coach job at Newcastle this will be offered to him this summer.
If Newcastle do appoint McClaren as head coach that will mean Newcastle’s mediocrity in the Premier League will continue, with the former Middlesbrough coach hardly having the credentials that can take Newcastle challenging for a top six position in the league.
There’s a lot of ifs in there.
19 April 2015 at 1:56 pm #141449Not even Newcastle would make such a daft signing. Championship at the best for James. He isn’t even standing out here since the new year. He seemed to be everywhere before Christmas, a real hard working player.
If he did go there, would they play him upfront and upfront on his own with strikers on the bench??19 April 2015 at 3:49 pm #141455I’d be very shocked if he’s still here for our Div1 campaign
19 April 2015 at 4:23 pm #141456I would but I reckon he would move to a ambitious club like Charlton, Huddersfield or even a club like Rotherham but we may be stuck with him if they won’t pay his over inflated wages.
19 April 2015 at 5:16 pm #141457As much as it would delight me to see him gracing the left flank of the Sports Direct Arena, I doubt even Ashley would spend peanuts on someone who was found out very quickly in the Premier League, and his performances over the past 2 years haven’t indicated that he’d be any better than he was last time.
Hopefully, relegation clauses will still be standard at Wigan (they were when they were in the premier league), and McLean wont be earning a fortune as a 3rd division footballer. If they aren’t, then it wouldn’t surprise me to see him at somewhere like Celtic where the level of opponents and his political beliefs would make him a hit.
19 April 2015 at 6:19 pm #141461Granted he isn’t that brilliant but he is a bit too good for Celtic!!
20 April 2015 at 1:08 am #141464I take it you mean Stalybridge Celtic?
20 April 2015 at 1:46 am #141467Stalybridge sounds about right.
20 April 2015 at 2:30 am #141468Without him we wouldn’t be in this position.
20 April 2015 at 10:36 am #141469I don’t know Sammy there are many reasons for us being in this position and its not just down to James we are in such a low position.
