A rather more unsavoury memory was the Policeman at Northwich in the FA Cup with a dart sticking out of his cheek bone.

as i recall (without any references so open to error) …

the previous round included 1-1 away at blackpool (still one of my most favourite away trips)

and a brilliant replay at springfield at which the turnstiles couldn’t cope with the crowd and the kick off was delayed

the game at northwich (when the copper got darted) only got abandoned when we were 3-0 up
        – lots of stockport fans turning up for a bit or argy-bargy

when we played it again it was 2-2
        – stockport turned up again

before the replay we already knew that we would be playing chelsea and then everton in the next 2 rounds if we got through so about 10,000+ turned up for a crabby 1-0 (possibly) extra time win in very very cold temperatures despite which none of our players wear gloves or tights or any of those snoodle things

Blackpool away, with the cover still on the old kop.
I have never heard the Latics fans so loud as that day.
We could hear the racket from miles away, and thought it was the home fans, when we got in and realised it was our lot it was a fantastic feeling.

That was THE best away game I’ve ever been to in terms of the following and noise generated.
I think the official attendance for the replay was around 15,000 but I reckon there must have been 20,000 on Springy Park that evening. I remember I had to watch the game from the Springfield end because I couldn’t get round to my usual place on the popular side because it was so packed.
Another massive following then went to Goodison in the next round and the 51,000 or so on that day made it the highest attendance of all the 3rd round matches.

            Happy days.

That replayed match at Northwich, did it take place on Christmas Eve or is my memory failing me again?

Bury away, cant remember the year, lee ashcroft breaks into the area ends up avin hand bags with paddy kenny following a tangle, minutes later we get a corner, ashcroft takes a drink out of kennys water bottle and smiles to the lads behind the goal as he splits it back in, corner cleared, ball up the field, paddy kenny takes a drink out of the bottle, dirty get, he had no idea why we were laughing our tits off.

Jed, (the only Latics fan from Anderton Mill) loved that one.
Do you remember him bringing a bird a couple of times who we christened ‘crab sticks’ for some reason.

she’s dead now, she wasn’t the full shilling. she was named crab sticks by stabey. when jed used to stand in that terrace bit under the stand we went over to talk to him. she was with jed . her and jed were eating these crab sticks she had with her. she was offering them around but had no takers. they stank bad. hence the name crab sticks

I was talking to Stabey at Blackburn, I hadn’t seen him hardly since the halcyon days of Springy.

Bit of an obvious ones, but I’m surprised no one’s mentioned the Sunderland fans launching themselves down the Shevington End mudslide.
