Now I don’t normally come on here to have a moan, but having just seen this, which is part of an article via http://www.newsnow.co.uk/h/Sport/Footba … n+Athletic, and there are more on the same topic. OK I know most of the stuff on there is crap, but I think there is something in this. I find it a bit worrying if it’s true.
Martinez has now decided to look elsewhere because he doesn’t have the funds to splash in the January transfer market.
7 January 2010 at 1:13 pm #17414I wouldn’t be too worried about it. It’s a cash-flow issue, and it’s a regular practice to ‘buy’ a player, but pay at a later date or in instalments. If Martinez is after a few players, then he won’t want to blow a substantial chunk of his budget all in one go. Celtic are in that much of a hole that they want the money up front. If it said he wanted McDonald on loan, and didn’t mention £4m at a later date, then I might be worried.
7 January 2010 at 1:26 pm #17415I can only see two reasons for this:
1. It’s a negotiating tactic (either Bob’s or Whelan’s). This means we are messing about a bit and taking a risk, but it’s still probably the right thing to try.
2. We really don’t have the money. If that’s true I am very worried. We’re desperate for a striker, probably above all other positions, and we can’t afford £4m. What the hell are we going to get for less?I’m not the worrying/moaning type either, but if it’s the latter of the above then I might start to be.
7 January 2010 at 1:41 pm #17416I would have thought it was a tactic to throw people of the scent. When teams like Birmingham say they have £20m to spend, teams like Liverpool knock up the price of trash like Babel.
7 January 2010 at 1:56 pm #17419It could very well be a bargaining tactic, but it could also be the fact that Martinez genuinely doesn’t want to spend £4m immediately.
Money from the players moving on won’t be received immediately, and if he’s successful in getting the Spanish left back, then that is potentially £8m gone in one fell swoop.
7 January 2010 at 2:36 pm #17425bobby will only spend what whelan says he can ;)
7 January 2010 at 3:13 pm #17428bobby will only spend what whelan says he can ;)And so he should, Whelan’s the Club Chairman.
7 January 2010 at 4:05 pm #17437bobby will only spend what whelan says he can ;)As Standish says, of course he will. Every other manager has exactly the same issue with their owner.
Play another record, if you have one.

Problem is £4m is nothing these days in terms of football, you’re not even gunna get a half-decent player for less than that. So if he doesn’t wanna splash it out immediately I would be worried. Unless its just that he dont wanna splash it out unless he is sure about the player. Which in that case would mean he’d have to go for a proven prem player, which you wouldn’t get for £4m, so what can he do?. We have to gamble, cheap foreigner, hope he adapts and becomes good.
7 January 2010 at 8:13 pm #17473let me add my take on this matter
roberto : mr weeeeelan can i have 4 million pounds for this aussie striker from celtic
big dave : im not giving tha fec all young bob,i gave thee 3 mill for that tosser scotland in the summer and look what a bargain hes turned out to be.
roberto: ah but this one scores goals mr.vheeeelan.
big dave : very well lad see if they will let you have him on loan and if hes any good you can sign him.
a bit over the top perhaps but a little closer to the bone than being skint methinks.
8 January 2010 at 1:52 am #17519This doesn’t make sense – having just made two major sales and balanced the books, we should be in a decent financial position. So, how is it that we can no longer afford more than £4m for a player…yet when we were in a worse financial position pre Bob we spent £6m on Nzog, £5.5 on Koumas and Heskey, and offered £7m and £10m for Johnson and Owen?

Do you mean Palacios and Valencia?
If so, that money has gone (N’Zogbia was bought with some of the Palacios money). Our wage bill is higher than ever, as we have a lot of well paid dead wood on the books. We have debts to clear and a club to run on no other viable income other than TV money and player sales. I’ll not go into details of a potential balance sheet again, because it’s now beyond boring, and it’s still regarded by many as a creature only found in fairytales, like a dragon or griffin. (Griffins couldn’t possibly exist in the real world. On an internet forum, possibly.)
I’m sure we can afford £4m as a one off for a player, however, who knows what has already been earmarked for other players this month? Why blow a substantial chunk of your transfer budget on one player when you’re trying to build a team?
