Good following from the Latics fans and a great shot for the goal from Fortune. Once again the young idiots set off flares. It appears that this is becoming the norm now… until someone gets badly burned. If anyone is caught with a flare they should be banned from every ground in the Football League.

I’m not sure what we as genuine supporters can do about these knobheads, but we need to knock all this on the head asap. If it happens at Barnsley then we really do need to help the stewards to identify the toerags, although I admit it’s easier said the done. The rugby managed to do it though, so I’m sure we as fans along with the club can weed them out.

George I hope the police have their cameras pointed in the right direction on Saturday, as no doubt they will be setting them off again. They are kids who think they are BIG TIME CHARLIES yet still sing “COYLE GIVE US A WAVE” then boo when he rightly ignores them. That chanting went out 10 years ago.

It is something that has got really popular over the last 12 months or so. Almost every club is doing it and those doing it seem to be the young generation. I for one couldn’t care less. I enjoy getting drunk at games, home or away. Not everybody does that but it’s my choice. If I was you I’d just make sure I was more towards the front of the stand as they tend to be set off towards the back. Instead of reporting those doing it just accept it, enjoy the atmosphere and like they do support the club in your own way.

I should also point out I really like the colours, smoke and smell :P

It made me laugh at Macclesfield as it added to what was already a great Latics atmosphere and a nice little day out all around but it does get old fast.

Asthma is caused by different things ranging across allergies to dust, smoke and even dairy products.

The matter of the fact is a lot of kids suffer from asthma and a face full of smoke if the wind is in the right direction could cause a serious asthma attack – possibly life threatening.

So I do hope the club identify any tards and follow through with lengthy bans.

Can you explain to me something that I’m obviously not grasping. How does setting a flare off improve the atmosphere? How does it show support for the club/team?

Alex, you’re usually a sensible lad, but you’re just showing naivety by sticking up for these morons who take flares to matches.

Flares are a fire hazard and can cause serious injury: simple as that. That’s why they are banned from football grounds.

If I take my children to a football match and even if I take your advice of sitting near the front, I don’t want to run the risk of some half-wit trying to lob a flare over our heads onto the pitch, misjudging it and ending up with my kids getting serious burns as it hits them or sets the stand on fire.

And don’t say they won’t throw them. If some kid with a flare suddenly notices the stewards or police are onto him, the first thing he’ll do is try and get rid of the evidence.

Add to that the potential that, each time a flare is set off, the club could be fined twenty-grand and/or supporters will banned from travelling.

Even the players don’t like people setting flares off, so how does that constitute supporting your team?

If you know any of the people who set the flare off, give them a collective kick from the overwhelming majority who think they are pricks.

I am not sticking up for or defending anybody. It is up to them if they wish to run the risk of being caught and maybe banned.

My point was basically that I don’t give a shit. If you don’t agree with it don’t get involved with it. Correct me if I’m wrong but aren’t they sold in stores with no age restriction, etc? Also, almost every ground you go to will search you one by one. Can they not identify a flare/smoke bomb and confiscate it?

Without knowing anybody who takes them personally I would like to imagine they have no intention of harming anybody. I don’t know what sort of risks are involved with them as I’ve never seen one in person but to be sold in shops with no age restrictions it’s unlikely they’re life threatening. Some shops even have age restrictions on eggs!

Either way, opinions are always going to be divided no matter what the majority think.

“Oh – I never thought that would happen. I didn’t mean it. What? It’s too late now? Someone has been seriously injured? It wasn’t my fault….”

I don’t know what sort of risks are involved with them as I’ve never seen one in person

Then why are you commenting against people who have and who, like me, view them as dangerous. The club view them as dangerous too, which is why they are banned in grounds. I don’t care there are no restrictions about buying them – that’s a separate discussion – but there ARE restrictions about bringing them into football grounds. It’s illegal. No debate.

And I’m with Standish on this about them being lobbed. That’s exactly what happened at Ashton Town the other week which caused a fracas with the players and club officials.

The use of them in football grounds is indefensible, and I’m surprised you are trying to defend it.

                    The legal position

                    http://www.fsf.org.uk/assets/Smoke-Bombs-Flares-and-Fireworks-Factsheet-for-FSF.pdf

Aceface said “One thing we can do is stop putting threads on forums about it”

No – perhaps we need to profile the consequences highly to ensure these idiots read this factsheet from the Football Supporters Federation. Particularly that courts view this seriously and have issued custodial sentences (“jail” for those hard of understanding, as the carriers of these things are) for people even with previous clean records. The record will also show on Criminal Records checks which will limit future job prospects and visas to US etc.

It is NOT just an innocent laugh.

Fireworks and crowds obviously don’t go together.

18 Nov 1993 – A football fan was killed by a flare after last night’s World Cup qualifying match between Wales and Romania in Cardiff.

25 Feb 2013 – A 17-year-old Corinthians supporter has confessed that he set off a flare that killed a 14-year-old Bolivian boy in a Copa Libertadores match.

So, they are banned in every/most grounds yes? I’ve seen a flare set off at almost every home game we have played since around February (in the away end). Think there were 2 against Liverpool and 2 against Villa. Don’t quote me on that though.

I go to a lot of away games and our fans seen to get them in all/most grounds including both visits to Wembley.

So, directing you back to my previous post why are stewards/police not confiscating them when doing the checks? I get searched at almost every away game. I’ve seen people thrown out of games for standing up, swearing, trying to enter the pitch, etc but never for setting off a flare/smoke bomb. I have only seen the flare/smoke bomb removed from the ground, never the fan. Are stewards/police getting their priorities wrong or like me do they just not care?
