What a fantastic game yesterday, I cannot remember the last time I felt so good walking away from a match. Now that I have had time to calm down and see the replays etc., it strikes me that this was possibly the most significant result in Latic’s history. It wasn’t just the scoreline but the manner of the victory. We took on one of the world’s most accomplished sides which was assembled at great cost and beat them at FOOTBALL. The sending off was probably my only regret because it gave the media the headline “Wigan beat ten-man Chelsea”.
I wont be a liar and say I knew we would beat them because I went to the match hoping that there wouldn’t be another humiliation to give our “fickle fan brigade” more ammunition. What was especially pleasing was the fact that the performance was achieved with the players that were left after the “big clubs” had “picked our bones” again and with a manager and owner who clearly love this club.
What was really refreshing for me was the feeling of “belonging” to the club again, it reminded me of the old days at Springfield. The way the players gave their all and the inclusiveness of Roberto’s TV comments (he never forgets the supporters) made me feel part of the victory and not just an onlooker. It reminded me of what football used to be before russian oil barons and arab princes gave football their generous loans ( philanthropists usually gift money ).
Roberto gave us a lesson in what can be achieved by hard work and all pulling in the same direction, perhaps some of our fans need to heed this lesson. It is easy to support the team when things are going well but slightly more difficult when we are up against it.

One of the things i’m impressed with the most, is how the media have responded to the result. The BBC website and Match of the day both made a point of saying how good we were, and even though chelsea were not at their best, not to take anything away from Wigan because they said we played very well.27 September 2009 at 1:39 pm #9793I liked the interview with Martinez after the game, if your brave you can beat the big clubs, right on Bob.

29 September 2009 at 11:09 am #9968Best result in clubs history.
A few of the long gone cup runs were good but come on…battering a team that should have put the best football machine ( Barca ) out of last seasons Euro cup.
Lampard looked totally cheesed off as every time he got the ball he had Thomas or Diame up his jacksy.
29 September 2009 at 2:21 pm #9977Me..just proud to say I support Wigan Athletic!
Was one of the best days I have ever had following Wigan, & even the “know it all” pundits said we were the better side!See what Jeff & the boys have to say this Saturday!
29 September 2009 at 3:08 pm #9980Fantastic result, game and performance. Most significant result though I disagree. The day we beat Reading to join the prem will live forever in the history books. Wigan Athletic promoted to the premier league is more significant than beating Chelsea.

The reason i said it was the most significant result rather than most important result is because the performance was on a level that I have never witnessed before at any Latics match.
Our level of performance against one of the best teams in the world has never been matched by any previous Latics team.
30 September 2009 at 1:32 am #10007The performance against Sheff Utd that kept us in Prem and thus gave us the chance to do what we did on Sat will long live fondly in my memory bank ! All hands on deck job !
