For the last few weeks, or months, I’ve been calling Bruce not fit to burn. I’ve been saying let’s give the guy some bloody stick when he comes back, for the way he walked out, and came back for Cattermole.
But in all seriousness, my attitude has changed. Why? Well, I’ll tell you.
In all honesty, can you blame the guy for walking out? For starters, let’s go back to January. We had assembled a decent enough side, which really did have the ability to push on and make a bid for Europe. Then came the transfer window, and we ended up selling our centre-forward, Emile Heskey and our best midfielder, and possibly our best player, Wilson Palacios.
Rumour at the time had it that Bruce was not best happy about things, and that he and the chairman had differing opinons over certain things. How true that is, I don’t know. But I can imagine there being some truth in it.
I think it was March when we played Sunderland at their place. And beat them. I’m pretty sure that after the game, Niall Quinn had a few words in Bruce’s ear, basically saying “we’ve a new owner coming in…..loads of cash…the freedom to go out and build a side…..massive support….etc”, and naturally, Steve was interested.
No doubt, he had come to see Latics for what they are. A small club, with severe limitations. A club that whenever they get a decent player, they get sold for profit, putting the task of building a team, backward. he obviously weighed things up and came to the conclusion that “I’d be daft not to take the offer”.And can anybody honestly blame him? I don’t. Not now.
True, he came back for Cattermole, endlessly pursuing him, much to our annoyance. But he knew in his heart of hearts, that we’d sell him. Furthermore, the player WANTED to go, and the reasons will be exactly the same as Bruce’s. He’ll have seen us as a ‘selling club’, with no real potential to grow, with that attitude. For a 21 year old midfielder, it’s not a good position to be in. He was offered the same conditions as Bruce had been tempted by, and naturally, he fancied it.
I would. So would you, if your totally honest.
So to sum up, I will NOT be booing either Bruce or Cattermole, as I don’t blame them for jumping ship. A sinking ship? Possibly. Certainly one that is struggling to sail in the financial waves of the Premiership. In fact, the only
thing I disagree with, what Bruce said, was his “Shopping at Harrods, rather than Tesco”.
In all honesty, I’d say it’s more a case of him shopping at the Trafford Centre, and us, Wigan, shopping at Home Bargain.1 September 2009 at 1:20 pm #7495For the last few weeks, or months, I’ve been calling Bruce not fit to burn. It’s only now he has gone you realise what a good job and what a good team he had built.
1 September 2009 at 3:55 pm #7522It’s only now he has gone you realise what a good job and what a good team he had builtNo its only shortsighted dicheads like you two that spends their time trying to find faults rather than seeing what a player or manager is trying to do.
When DW has been hounded out of the club and we cant find an investor willing to splash millions on us , i can hear everbody saying just the same.
1 September 2009 at 4:12 pm #7527Are you Whelan’s bum-boy, or what?
Maurice……is that you?
Or are you his son, or summat?
1 September 2009 at 4:18 pm #7530Neither , just someone who can see , appreciate and support what someone is trying to do , in my opinion support of this club doesnt include trying to make the people directly involved in attempting to better the fortunes feel so bad as they will walk away.
But then again im not trying to make a name for myself on a messageboard.
1 September 2009 at 4:24 pm #7532Vat changes like the wind you see .18th August get behind the team
3 games later Whelen out
1 September 2009 at 6:20 pm #7544Nobheads. Maybe I’ve actually seen Whelan for what he is?
I am actually BEHIND the team.
I am actually BEHIND Martinez.
It’s Whelan and his reluctance to spent and thick khunts like you who won’t accept it/don’t want to face it.
I’m quite happy to go down to the Championship, as it happens. Because that is our level. We are NOT a Premiership team. We’ve already been overtaken by Stoke, Hull, and probably Burnley will, as well.
Crap support, chairman who is tight, and people like you who are in denial. The “Look how far we’ve come brigade”. Yes, but how far COULD we actually go?
I feel damn sorry for Roberto. In him, we have a forward thinking manager with good ideas and principles. But he’s being held back by Whelan’s frugality.Would he have got away with it, with the likes of Souness, Allardyce, etc? Would he balls. First question at interview. “What is my transfer budget?” The answer from people like the forementioned?
“No thanks”.
1 September 2009 at 6:22 pm #7545I think your losing it again Vat
1 September 2009 at 6:26 pm #7547I think you’ve already lost it, pal.
If you can’t see what the problem actually is.
Everton away on Sunday……..crap. Disjointed performance. Scharner playing…..well, I’m not too sure actually.
A few weeks ago, I came round to the way of thinking that we had assembled a half decent squad on the quiet. A better bench than normal, and a few different options. But that’s gone now. We are worse now, than when Hutchings was in charge.
It’s crying out for some money to be spent.
So, do you actually think we’re alright, and we’ll be ok?
Not a chance, they way we are. It’s a mess.

If, as you seem to think , we are a championship side and that is our level , why do you think Whelan would spend millions on something that in your own words would be pointless.?
1 September 2009 at 7:33 pm #7562Because that’s what he’s there to do, and if he takes the money we’ve got for players such as Cattermole, and ‘skims’ a bit of here, and a bit there, and goes and builds Byker fookin Grove, or whatever it is he’s got planned for that field in the Town centre, then to me that constitutes fraud.
Not legally, or indeed, officially. But it is frauding anybody who is daft enough to buy a season ticket, in the hope that the money will be invested to the benefit of the team.
1 September 2009 at 8:47 pm #7625So lets get this right , you are whining and moaning and desparate for DW to spend millions of pounds to stay in the PL but at the same time you would actually like the club to get relagated ?
Dave Whelan is actually building us a club for the future , yes thats CLUB , one that not going to be a one or two season wonder and then sink without trace full of debt.
You are so mixed up and full of double standards it belies belief.
1 September 2009 at 9:10 pm #7641Don’t give a flying f u c k what you think, pal.
I feel cheated.
1 September 2009 at 9:59 pm #7662Read the thread fully and i have to agree (In some degree) with Vat69er….. although i do respect and appreciate what Big dave has done for this club, but you have to think that if we hadn’t sold all of our best players what a quality side we would have had (Probably europe pushng) and also have to think that if he spent just SOME of the millions he got for our better players on quality players (proven in the prem maybe?) what a team we could still have but he seems unwilling to spend decent money. He has put a lot into this club and got us to the premiership but why stop speding now….The dream could go further!.
Oh and i disagree with you about Cattermle Vat69, as he would surely have continued to progress at this club and been bought by a bigger club than Sunderand next season more than likely, ESPECIALLY with him shining even more in our team now our other better players have gone
1 September 2009 at 10:12 pm #7668Er, yes I agree with you RE Cattermole.
I never thought or said otherwise.
