After about 10 minutes yesterday practically the whole of the Latics following stood up in unison and belted out
“we know what we are, we know what we aaaarrrrre, FA cup champions, we know what we are”
Did you both join in ?

Of course not! I may be a lot of things, but I’m no hypocrite ;)
To be honest, I very rarely sing. It’s not fair on those around me.
Oh, and very few around us joined in, but I think we were sat in a section reserved for more discerning patrons ;)

I didn’t either !!!! :P
14 April 2014 at 1:10 am #129865I joined in. I just used the correct terminology of winners.
14 April 2014 at 2:45 am #129882I joined in, and it sounded absolutely brilliant echoing around the stadium.
I even joined in at the end with the new version replacing ‘we know what we are’ with ‘we’ll sing it till May’.
If European Cup winners can sing about themselves being Champions then I can’t see a problem with us singing about it either.14 April 2014 at 2:40 pm #129898If European Cup winners can sing about themselves being Champions then I can’t see a problem with us singing about it either. You mean the Champions League? yes, I can see why you can’t see a probem with it.
Good to hear a few renditions of YAMS as well, although we still haven’t mastered the words to that, either.

Is that the same Champions League that starts and finishes with a knock out Cup format, or perhaps the same as the World Cup Winners who have been through a League format to qualify for the Cup knock out stage.
In the past haven’t the World Cup finalists qualified from being top of a League group, in fact if this old fading memory of mine serves me correct, haven’t the finalists, on occasion, had to qualify by winning TWO mini Leagues
If this is the case, and looking at YOUR criteria of what the FA Cup winning team should be known as, should the World Cup winners not be referred to as World Champion League winners or just World Champions
Just an after thought, wasn’t that tournament your own beloved Manchester United, ditched the FA Cup for known as the World Club Championships and the Winners became the World Club Champions despite it being a knockout competition.
14 April 2014 at 7:25 pm #129903The winners of the World Cup are the Champions of the World as that is the main prize. They are not the World Cup Champions though.
The winners of the Champions League (or European Cup) are the winners of the biggest prize in Europe and as such are the European Champions. They are not the European Cup Champions or Champions League Champions though.
Wigan rugby are the Super League Champions or Grand Final winners. They are not the Grand Final Champions.
What are we actually the Champions of? The Football Association perhaps? No. England? Of course not. We cannot be Champions of a cup. We can be Champions of a league/country/continent but not a cup. We are the winners of the cup.

Apologies I edited this as opposed to replying to it.
We won a knockout trophy and so by your logic cannot be Champions?
You don’t like my answer so you remove my post, isn’t that is a beyond your remit as a moderator, in truth it is flaming pathetic.
But why do I expect anything else from a rugby biased person like you who contributes nothing to this board other than defending that second rate sport you watch.
Incidentally I don’t see you on any of the worrier message boards defending the latics corner or moderating any of the crap they post about us on there.
And I will post it again plus some more I have thought of since you removed my first post:-
You bitter rugby lot won 2 knock out trophies last season and didn’t have to beat many teams to win those, Huddersfield Giants are superleague champions not you.
Either way it is about as important in the whole scheme of things as the Springfield hotel winning the Wigan & District Darts and Dominos League
14 April 2014 at 7:53 pm #129907From the Super League website:
Super League began in 1996, replacing the RFL Championship and switching from a winter to a summer season. Each team plays 27 games between February and September: 13 home games, 13 away games and a Magic Weekend game at a neutral venue. At the end of the season, the top eight teams enter play-offs leading to the Grand Final which determines the champions.

At the risk of repeating myself for the hard of thinking and reading (that’ll mainly be you, then) my criteria has never been about the literal validity of referring to the FA Cup Winners as Champions. My criteria has always been that, in 142 years of the competiton, nobody, but nobody has ever referred to themselves as FA Cup Champions apart from Wigan Athletic.
You might say that makes us unique. I would say it makes us look a bit daft.
So, my bit in bold on the Champions league was probably a bit of a non-argument. However, it appears to have given you some great opportunities to use the bold function, and haven’t you done a good job of it? Well done, you!
