is it just me or can anyone else not understand his current role in the team – its like we are playing with 10 as I really cant see his contribution .. whichever position he is supposed to be playing at the moment. Brilliant right back but is him playing wherever he is bringing anything to the team, surely there must be other/better options ?
3 December 2018 at 9:47 pm #173644Couldn’t agree more, he’s wandering around like a fish out of water at the moment. His final ball/crossing on Saturday was shocking.
Voted for him as player of the year last season with no hesitation, but besides being at a different level, he’s now also playing a different position…. and it doesn’t seem to be working.4 December 2018 at 2:07 am #173655So who do you blame that on ?, It’s down to the manager to find a players best position. If he’s asked to do a job he’s not use to doing and his performance levels drop is that the fault of the player ?
4 December 2018 at 6:10 am #173657In this case yes because Byrne has always said it’s his favoured position and he doesn’t consider himself a full back.

Next thing you’ll be telling me Garner’s a forward.
It’s tinkering when not needed I mean, whytf didn’t he just start with Vaughan / Windass ? the same 2 that ran Blackburn ragged. He makes changes for the sake of it4 December 2018 at 3:22 pm #173671Thing is where is he actually being asked to play ? – I just cant work it out and seems like were down to 10 from the beginning as he has zero contribution from what ive seen so far.
4 December 2018 at 4:04 pm #173672The dilemma Cookie has is that the game is changing again. Many teams are reverting to a more familiar back four and the long ball is also being used in parts of games to combat the high press. He has to adapt and maybe picks players he thinks best suited to these in game changes. Whilst the best will still try to play scintillating football when possible it was noticeable in the Merseyside derby that at times both Liverpool and Everton keepers adopted the big punt upfield. Arsenal are on a long unbeaten run playing a more traditional formation using twin strikers although that run has included some games deemed very winnable. Cookie is still finding his feet at this level and will need to adjust to the ever changing tactics now being used. I’m sure he will and we will benefit from it.COYL

4 December 2018 at 7:06 pm #173679Still doesn’t answer the question of where he is supposed to be playing ..
4 December 2018 at 9:07 pm #173680Right attacking midfield is where he is meant to be playing.
4 December 2018 at 10:11 pm #173683Right attacking midfield is where he is meant to be playing.I can’t help but think we might get more attacking pentration from MacManaman playing in that position, but I suppose PC will be thinking that Byrne may provide a bit more cover for the defence as well.
4 December 2018 at 11:32 pm #173685In this case yes because Byrne has always said it’s his favoured position and he doesn’t consider himself a full back. That’s how I see it, in fact he fell out with Caldwell because he was asking him to play right back, to the point where he went out on loan to Charlton (at which point I thought we’d seen the last of him)
Only to come back under different management and yet still playing right back….to great effect and he deservedly got the plaudits for last seasons efforts. He’s now in the role that he always saw as his prime position and he’s been ineffective …..now whether that’s because he isn’t up to it (at this level) or whether he needs more time to bed back in I’m not certain……I hope it’s the latter but there looks to be cause for doubt at the moment.
