Interesting to listen to his interview on the podcast. He states he never wanted to leave and would have happily spent his career here but circumstances within the club left him no option but to leave.Anyone more informed than me care to elighten me as to what he is implying ??. He also states it was the best time in his career and he’s never played with a group of players who got on so well particularly Jason Roberts.Funny as I was always under impression he was a disruptive Bertie Big Bollocks so maybe all the info seeping out was way off …..nothing changes then. Also interesting to hear his views on playing 2 strikers.
15 September 2018 at 4:48 pm #171777I hated the reception and abuse he got when he came back and had to be subbed before half time.
15 September 2018 at 4:54 pm #171778We slapped a 3 mill price tag on Nathan I believe. West Brom triggered the release clause offering £3 million and a pound. The club and his agent did the deal. Its always been banded about that he left in tears though I couldn’t obviously collaborate it. Bryan Robson never picked him much and his career nosedived.
15 September 2018 at 6:42 pm #171779His wife forced the sale through. What a load of shite.
15 September 2018 at 10:50 pm #171791Late on the season before, his agent released the info to the press about a release clause – Jewell was livid
Also his form wasn’t too hot & he also got dropped for Brett Ormerod towards the end of the season. There was also an issue around him suddenly getting married without telling the club & unofficial mutterinngs about his fasting effecting his game during RamadanLatics offered him improved terms during the summer but (as were all the deals that summer) it was linked in to appearances & performance bonuses & Ellington wanted a bigger lump sum but Latics wouldn’t budge.
His agent hawked him round & let clubs know the release clause. West Brom put the bid in & offered a salary he was happy with – I think I remember him stating however that the potential salary he could have got at Latics was bigger (although clearly not the basic). So he left
Don’t let him try and re-write history now coz it all backfired on him. His agent & himself engineered the move and not the club – does anyone seriously think the club wanted to lose one half of its best ever strike partnership on the eve of the season???
16 September 2018 at 12:05 am #171792Strike partnership. Who were the last two to play consistently in that role?
Must have been pre Martinez.
Was it Hugo with a partner? De Ridder possibly.
So long ago.16 September 2018 at 12:06 am #171793Heskey and Zaki? Heskey and whoever replaced him?
16 September 2018 at 12:20 am #171794Was that the same season? Did Heskey go in January of that same season?
It’s only ten years ago. Seen a lot since then. Cup win, semi final, promotions, relegations.
Amazing.16 September 2018 at 6:20 pm #171815At the end of the day Wigan had a strict wage policy and Ellington wanted a better deal so off he went.
Then abit later on in came Bruce who Whelan backed to the hilt were they threw the wage policy down the duggy and in turn nearly turning us into the new sheep shaggers.
I prefer the “If you don’t like it fook off” approach no matter what Division were in and maintain a well run club.Ellington preferred the money rather than showing the Prem what him and Roberts could do.
Am I right in thinking he had injury problems near the end of his time at Wigan ?17 September 2018 at 2:47 pm #171830I’ve spoken to him A few times and Interviewed him twice in the Stadium. His side of events has always been consistent.
First time I interviewed him, I was cocky in quoting his misjudgement in going to WBA instead of staying at Wigan, why did your agent turn you…. he paused and thought, then gave the diplomatic answer that he and Jewel had not seen eye to eye, the gaffer had made it clear he wouldn’t be playing him and that he should look for somewhere.
I had a lot if respect for him, as when I spoke to him privately later he told me what it he was put through.
Its a shame, but he holds no malice or grudge, he just got on and is still getting on.FA Cup Winners 2013, sounds good that
17 September 2018 at 3:09 pm #171831Thanks Jason …. always good to have an explanation rather than just speculation.

Its a shame, but he holds no malice or grudge, he just got on and is still getting on.I think that its clear that there’d been some friction between the pair of them – hence the comments about his marriage, conversion & his agent releasing the info about the release clause in his contract whilst we were challenging for promotion.
However his comments about being told to look for somewhere else don’t match the interviews he gave in the aftermath of him leaving. Not saying I 100% believe how the club portrayed it at the time but nor do I believe Ellington’s (amended) version. The truth will be somewhere between the 2
Similarly i don’t believe Jimmy Bullard’s version of how he wound up leaving either (or the club’s) as he has a vested interest in making himself out not to be the one in the wrong. Same with The Duke
19 September 2018 at 9:16 pm #171893If that’s the case then Jewell is partly to blame for Ellingtons departure .
Pretty much all of us have worked with someone who we dont get along with but we still do our job and a kinda funny way theres an underlying mutual respect purely because your both good at what you do.The greatest managers in years gone by are those who get the best out of players they don’t getting along with.
I’m not sure who’s at fault but I’ll always wonder if the Roberts/Ellington would have caught fire in the Prem, shame20 September 2018 at 12:10 am #171896I’m not sure who’s at fault but I’ll always wonder if the Roberts/Ellington would have caught fire in the Prem, shameNot neccessarilly caught fire, but i believe they could have done well.
21 September 2018 at 6:06 pm #171921I’ve spoken to numerous players and agents that were around the in at that time and left in the first year or so of us going up. Every single one had the same story that they were promised new significant contracts if/when the club went up. Safe to say that this was verbally and on going up the club/Whelan changed tack and different offers were made/players sold or released! Whelan was a master negotiator in business and no doubt brought that into football.
