Sad that Neil Davids passed away, aged just 56, at Poulton-le-Fylde last friday, the 23rd.
My memory is fading a little here, but I was at the Everton FA cup match 4th round in 1980 when Latics took 20k. Didn’t he get sent off for thumpimg Brian Kidd?
RIP.

Other way round, John. It was Kidd who got sent off.
Was only a nipper Arky, but I think your memory i slipping. Neil Davids got flattened defending a corner and in the melee that followed Brian Kidd was sent off. Not sure if it was Kidd that did Davids tho. Latchford and Frank Corrigan were also involved. Seem to remember Davids saying sumat like he’d lost a bit of respect for a certain England International.
He probably was the first pin up star to play for the tics. Went on the field looking like a male model and came off looking like one.
From my fading memory he was a great reader of the game.
Sorry to see your life ending so early Neil, our thoughts are with your family and friends.
Just read this which will make sure the name Neil Davids will always remain a big part of Wigan Athletics history.
he probably didn’t like it at the time but….
He moved to Wigan Athletic in 1978, and played in the club’s first ever Football League fixture against Hereford United. He also became the club’s first Football League player to be substituted.[3]

John, didnt Kidd kick Neil in the head whilst he was on the ground thus getting himself sent off? and there was 20k there from Wigan at the time it was a gate receipt record for Goodison which was broken shortly after for the Merseyside derby.
Very sad news indeed i remember the Everton game and his picture of innocence after he had clattered latchford. His interview afterwards was pure class also and Latics easily took 20,000 to goodison (it was their biggest gate of the season other than the derby match 52000 i think).
A good player who served the club well and gave some good performances.
I hope they have a minutes applause for him at the Sunderland game next tuesday!
rest in peace
I was stunned to hear Neil Davids had passed on. Very sad news, 56 is no age…My Deepest Sympathy to his family and friends.
I remember the Everton game quite well. I think we’d have given them a good game if Joe Hinnegan hadn’t gone off injured so early. We had a solid back four then with Hinnegan, Davids, Methven and Fretwell, but that injury undid us.
Sad news indeed. RIP Neil. Have i missed it or has this been completely ignored by the local media which would not surprise me, but more importantly the official club site.

Ex,if my memory serves me well didnt the Everton hatchet-man Billy Wright go thru one of our players from behind within the first 30 seconds? I seem to think that we were kicked all over the place that day. Also remember the advertising hoarding falling off behind the goals.
