Very sad to hear about some mindless idiots’ hatred for Lennon.

It’s quite shocking that people are mad enough to assault and even send parcel bombs to him. Throw back to the hooliganism of the past which many thought was behind us.

If Fergie was still managing in Scotland, surely the same would happen to him? Ahh well, at least it’s made Scottish football slightly less like watching paint dry recently…

Duke, the same wouldn’t happen to Ferguson – as it does not happen to McCoist, Butcher, Jim Jefferies etc, and unfortunately it has feck all to do with hooliganism.

Having a Northern Irish Catholic managing at a club that has had accusations of IRA connections thrown at them for decades was always asking for trouble. All Lennon has to do it make the wrong gesture and every sectarian bigot in the Western World will want to have a pop at him.

Best thing he could do is step down and allow Celtic to appoint someone who presents a less obvious sectarian target.

Standish – I was joking about Fergie, it was a reference to how much of a c0ck I think he is

Also, just because he had ‘accusations’ of IRA connections doesn’t mean he had anything to do with them. Although I suppose it’s the same as an Afghan coming to manage in the Premier League I suppose.

And there’s a big difference between having a pop and parcel bombs I think! If I was him and he feels up to it, I’d stay and show the haters that they won’t win this battle.

standish your opinions posted on here are ones i always respect, dont always agree with, but they are normally relevent and lucid, but the statement you have just made is a disgrace –

NOBODY in this world should EVER bow down to terror tactics or provocation by mindless morons who have targeted a football manager because of his background – we should, as a united group on this board and wigan athletic fans in general be sending a message of support to neil lennon and shouting in every media that ordinary football fans will not tolerate this kind of crap in our sport.

Good point LMB and I have to agree with you.

Don’t let the ignorant, aggressive tools win.

          Come on team Lennon!!

The Neil Lennon saga is no longer a football issue. It’s gone way beyond that. He’s had death threats in the past from loyalists even during his playing days (Duke, it isn’t Neil Lennon who is accused of IRA connections, it’s Celtic FC.), and his spat with McCoist was merely the touch paper these people needed to rake it all back up again.

You say they are mindless idiots. Unfortunately, in most instances (last night aside), the people who have send parcel bombs, threatened his family etc are deluded certainly, but not mindless. They know exactly what they are doing and why they are doing it. I doubt if few of them even give a flying f about football.

If Lennon was manager anywhere else in the world apart from Glasgow, this would never have happened. Nowhere other than Northern Ireland has such a tradition of bigotry, and religious based violence. Glasgow has been called ’Belfast Lite’ and with the recent brief re-emergence of the troubles in Northern Ireland, the last thing anyone needs is a reason to stoke old coals and bring all this to the mainland.

I appreciate that nobody should back down to terrorism, but when one man is targeted so vehemently, in my opinion, in the interests of safety for both he and his family, it would make sense if f he was taken out of the limelight for a while – even if he took a job in England to get away from it.

Every football fan in Britain could write a letter of protest, but it will make not one iota of difference as long as they still celebrate with Orange Marches in July every year, fly union jacks on one side of a street and Irish tri-colours on another, and refuse to observe a minute silence in respect for fallen soldiers. It’s a scourge, and unfortunately Mr Lennon in his current position is too easy a target for some people to resist.

Fair enough I suppose, but not every other Celtic manager has been treated the same way. You might point to Lennon’s behaviour in previous games but surely old firm games have kicked off just as much?

It’s totally a personal decision for him to make now regarding the welfare of himself and his family.

Within the last year I was at a meeting with some of our people from Belfast.

They literally (and I mean literally in a literal sense) could not believe that I was allowed a Wigan Athletic mug in work. Not that it was Wigan Athletic :D but that they were not allowed to show allegiance to any particular sporting organisation that may thereby display a sectarian bias.

How on earth do you explain that it’s a game when otherwise very rational people see nothing wrong in that!!

              #65199

It is shocking Garswood, but all some people need is an excuse to bring other issues into it. Because Lennon has a mouth on him, every sectarian idiot has latched onto it.

Have a read of this, which just about sums it up.

It appears that being Catholic in Scotland is a crime now.

The whole incident is shocking to say the least, and stems from sectarian hatred rather than anything to do with football. This is one of the fallout’s of the NI peace process, when the cease-fires were signed a certain number of activists from both sides were, how do I put it, encouraged to leave NI and never come back. These people are active in the west coast of Scotland, and over the past few years this has filtered through into football more and more.

Lennon had a history with the NI national team and refused to play due to the bigots who wouldn’t accept him being catholic in the NI team.

Lennon certainly doesn’t help himself at times, but what he has been through, you know what celebrating a goal or two in a passionate style is the least you would grant him. Death threats and parcel bombs cant be nice.

If people expect him to step down, these bigots will win. He can do a lot to stop inflaming the situation, but shouldn’t give in to them.

This all goes back to the conversations I have mentioned on here in the past year. Its no surprise that Rangers have been banned from having crowds at a couple of games because of their sectarian and hatred chanting.

You would have thought this was a thing of the past at football, but obviously not.

I’ve met some real salt of the earth Rangers & celtic fans over the years who as soon as you’ve started talking about football have turned into the biggest idiots on the planet
On top of that because their football is inextricably linked to their religion, religious bigotry can be thrown into the mix as well

Neil Lennon has been a target for those on one side of the divide in Scotland & Northern Ireland ever since on the eve he was due to captain Northern Ireland for the first time he is alleged to have said that he would prefer to be playing for a united Ireland side. He didn’t deserve what followed by any stretch of the imagination but anyone with half a brain cell would have known what would follow a comment like that in countries like N Ireland & Scotland (I believe there is some doubt as to whether he actually said it)

So he was already a target before he became Celtic boss. He is now the figurehead for the sporting club which many see as the banner for one side of the divide.
So have other managers but they haven’t got the flack he has got & whilst nothing excuses what has happened with the parcel bombs, bullets in the post, assaults in the ground, Neil Lennon himself needs to realise that, being in the position he is, he needs to reign in his conduct. Acting like he did with Ally McCoist was inexcusable no matter what McCoist said, in the replay he antagonised rangers fans with his gestures, he’s constantly moaning that there’s a conspiracy against Celtic in the SFA & SPL, accusing teams of trying harder against Celtic than they do against Rangers just days before his team play that side etc..
As I say none of it excuses what has happened & in an ideal world he could say & do those things & people would just shrug their shoulders & say its only a game but in N Ireland, parts of Scotland & the Old Firm unfortunately it isn’t just a game

Going back to my first paragraph in his dealings with the media & from what I’ve seen of Celtic games, unfortunately Neil Lennon presents an image that he is like of of those celtic/rangers fans I was on about. No other Celtic or rangers manager that i can remember has done & on top of what happened with the N Ireland captaincy that’s why he has become such a target for the morons from the opposite “side” to him

To me religion is a joke, for one I dont believe all the things jesus so called did because its scientifically impossible and the other reason i think its a joke because it causes more wars than anything else.
