i’ve been a supporter since 1978 & have seen so many highs & lows at this club in all of my 32 years. yesterdays game against spurs was not a home banker, though i do feel that when we switched to 442, things did improve & maybe it would be worth playing this formation to start with & changing to a more defensive set up if we are winning. what annoys me at present is this “get martinez out campaign.” this reminds me so much when jewell first came to wigan & we were crap during his first season in charge, then come his second season look what happened after that. this season is all about transitions & basically STAYING in the premier league – which i think we might do – albeit by the scruffs of our necks. 2 seasons ago fulham just survived & look at where they are now. just be patient with martinez this season & hopefully the rewards will be justified. as a football club we need to be in this together – so lets start supporting the team as opposed to constant jeering/booing as this will not help in any way. if things still don’t improve next season then is the time to review the situation with martinez – not now. lets all keep the faith & support them.

I bet you supported Kenny Swain, as well.

That’s a very good post, but unfortunately, I’m sure some of the ‘football experts’ on here will pick holes in what you’ve written because it has a positive current about it, and you’ll be pigeon-holed as one of the ‘rose tinted glasses’ brigade. Be warned!

Edit: Ah, come on gents, it’s a first post, and a bit of positivity. Cut the man some slack.

As a self-proclaimed “football expert” I’m gonna pick some holes in the original posters argument.
        Well one actually:
“this reminds me so much when jewell first came to wigan & we were rubbish during his first season in charge, then come his second season look what happened after that”

What actually happened that was come late December/early Jan Jewell had started to turn things round, was bringing in good players & our form from then to the end of the season was “play off” form. He was then able to carry that on.
What’s happening at the moment is that performances and results are getting worse & the manager doesn’t seem to have a chuffin clue what to do to change it

To a man (& woman) everybody at work who saw that game on SKY yesterday has commented on what a poor side Latics look. If people like them can see it how can some of the “he’ll come good” brigade not see it too?

to be fair i never once supported kenny swain but think its unfair to compare 3rd division to premier league anyroad. yesterday, apart from a very dubious offside goal we equalled spurs for 80 mins, until the 2nd goal knocked the stuffing out of us,which usually happens to teams suffering from lack of confidence. but if we do go down i’ll still be there next season & the season after that. read in yesterdays programme about the 1200 crowd we had at springfield park back in the 94/95 season. this might get on people’s wicks i know, but i was in that crowd that day. i have seen worse times at this club believe me.

          Runcorn – good post

Tyldesley – Not too sure what you mean, I think the results are getting better and we look more consistent. That may be consistently poor in parts but in the last few games, we kept a clean sheet, came into the spurs game undefeated in 3…..when was the lat time in this campaign we were undefeated in 3 matches. Your comments are factually incorrect sir!

“I think the results are getting better”

Sir, I think it is you who is making factually incorrect comments

Looking at the facts, in Latics first 13 games of this season we picked up 14 points with 4 wins & scored 14 goals
In the last 13 games we have picked up 11 points with 2 wins & have scored 12 goals
The only plus side is that in the first 13 games we conceded 31 goals & in the last 13 we have only conceded 21 & its 3 clean sheets to 2 in favour of the last 13 games!!!

Bar goals conceded, the results have not improved at all but actually got worse

In response to Runcornfan1978 – yes bar an offside goal it should have been 0-0 after 80 minutes but a) games last for 90 minutes & not 80 & b) Spurs were better than Latics from start to finish bar the 10 minute 4-4-2 spell. I’ve seen teams under the cosh for an entire game but come out with a 0-0 – it doesn’t mean that they’ve equalled them in terms of performance

Someone on another thread has just boasted that we were “on an unbeaten run” before yesterdays game. Talk about talking shyte.

Dear god! Unbeaten we may have been, but only bloody just. Bolton very nearly won the game late on, and Stoke also finished the stronger. (a reoccuring theme this season, eh?) And also, didn’t either Stoke or Bolton hit the bar late on?

Totally inept. How people are defending it, I have no idea.

            You’re correct for once.
            You have no idea.

John, you see that’s where you are wrong.

Fact is, I have been right all season. I said months ago that we looked shyte and Martinez was not up to the job. But no. I allowed myself to be convinced by the eternal optimists that it would all come good, and everything would end up fine and dandy.
I defended Martinez like mad, one here, and elsewhere. But there comes a point when enough is enough. The same old excuses, comments, finding positives, tactics, etc. It’s all so drab, man.

Give it 2 or 3 weeks, and we’ll be languishing.

I actually agree with runcorn here id love too see who we will be signing under martinez in the summer hes obviously building a young lively side, which for me, im happy with. At the moment luckily for us there are many weaker sides in the prem. But in fact these teams arnt as weak as they seem i think basically the top 8 even 10 teams have got much much better. The likes of spurs and city spending money villa fulham everton keeping their best players and adding to their squads and bringing youth through. Then we’ve got stoke and brum who have spent well and seem solid. What have wigan spent? Basically Ok hands up were not playing the best football and were going through a bad patch, but there are 5 teams below us, were 1 point behind a sunderland team that have spent 40mil something like that? too say martinez is tactically inept is bizarre, hes young, hes learning still, he lead us too taking apart the best team in the league? and finally how do all you haters know what happens behind the scenes, at training, knocks and injuries, players behaviour?

All im saying is lets get behind the team!!! not slag off any little pety thing its becoming a head ache
