Mauro Boselli is looking to break into the team and show us what we bought him for in the first place.
He is two years older and has some good experience under his belt whilst on his loan spells.
From what I remember it was a case of his family not being able to settle that caused him not to settle and so maybe he could turn out to be the 12-15 goal striker we crave…… and he is already here, so no transfer fees.
If, indeed, he has sorted out his family dynamic and has recaptured his past form then there is no better time than now to secure a lucrative end to his footballing career than playing here for a few years then, hopefully, moving on for a big pay-off to us to a bigger club.
Win-Win
(disclaimer…….he does have to pot a few for us for this to work of course)
I’m not optimistic nor holding out any great hope that he will turn out to be our 10-15 goal a season person.
he wasn’t suited to the old 4-5-1 set up coz that required a lot of graft that he wasn’t suited to putting in. For all intents & purposes he would still be playing the same role for much of the time – when defending or not in possession he is still the lone front man, its only in possession that it becomes 3 (or more) up front
The only difference with the current set up is that it seems to create more chances but a vital cog in that is the ability of Di Santo to drop deep to receive the ball, create space for others to exploit & lay it off.
Boselli is a striker who gets on the end of chances & doesn’t do all the donkey work that Di Santo & even Sammon get through.
Take out the ability of Di Santo in the build up work & the ability of the team to create the chances for a poacher like Boselli diminishes
Not posted on here for a while so I’ll start with a positive post….He’s crap!
Slowest striker I can remember and that’s why he did nothing. The prem was too quick for him 2 years ago, he’s 2 years older so won’t be any faster = not hopeful but hey! please prove me wrong!
Now that’s the positive stuff out the road I’m off for a negative moan somewhere :woohoo:
Boselli’s whole game was about getting the ball to his feet with his back to goal, knocking it wide before turning the defender and being on the end of the cross. He did that on several occasions but the cross never came or wasnt good enough.
Now that we seem to play higher up the field and with a faster tempo this shouldn’t be a problem as he’ll have the likes of Boyce, Beausejour, Maloney and hopefully Victor to supply the crosses.

That’s exactly why I think he’ll do better this time around.
Balls were being crossed into the box towards the end of last season and I think that will suit his game.

Isnt it the fact he couldnt hit a cows a**e with a banjo the reason for him not staying?
No, and I got that from the horse’s mouth, continuing the animal theme. It was because he didn’t settle in Wigan. Wasn’t the first and he won’t be the last.
Let’s hope the two additional years of maturity, coupled with the responsibility that comes with starting a young family have changed the man. Let’s give him the benefit of that particular doubt before we launch into the usual unqualified pulling to pieces of his and the manager’s technical prowess, eh?
Give the lad a chance I say, we play a completely different game now, if you look at a few of our players at the first half of the season they looked woeful, start playing 3-4-3 and they become our most valuable players! Gary Caldwell being a prime example, started the season looking terrible, I had no confidence in him at all. As soon as Bobby changed the formation he come into his own.
Strikers thrive on support, they need to play how they like, Torres is a prime example, at Liverpool he was a world beater, at the rent boys he couldn’t score in a brothel! I’m not saying he will be anywhere near as good as Torres, but even a striker that can bag 10 a season would be fantastic for us. With Franco coming into his own and a renewed, reformed Boselli then we might actually have a decent strike force and not rely on Boycey to score our goals!
The fact they’re both from Argentina might count for something too… But I don’t it!
Even if he doesn’t bag that many goals, he could set a few up, holding up the ball and so on. Moses isn’t exactly prolific but his ability to set up a goal proved key. Surely setting up a goal is equally important as scoring one!

Good post Mr Southport….more positive.
I particularly like the bit about ‘setting up’ as well, indeed is it not a stastic used in major competitions when assessing the award of the Golden Boot.
I’m looking forward to Mauro coming back and fitting in to our new and invigorated system.
