Those of you who have played or been involved in local football may be interested to see that Dave Orrell has been awarded an MBE.
31 December 2011 at 4:08 pm #76640Rory frigging McIlroy and Lorraine Kelly. Come off it. It is about time the honours list was scrapped. I am all for people getting them for charity work but what about the man/woman on the street who earn millions all their life devoted to charity work. Not just making an appearance in an army camp abroad and getting your celebrity face in the paper for doing so.
31 December 2011 at 5:35 pm #76645Is he the referee? Quite gangly with a tash. He was in my day anyway long ago.
31 December 2011 at 5:43 pm #76647Top ammy league ref. Used to do the round up for the ammy leagues in the local rags. He reffed a final of a cup at Robin Park that I played in many years ago. Did the programmes for the game and honoured me with being the ‘one to watch’ on our side and referring to me as a ‘cultured striker’. I’m sure he got me mixed up with someone else
Was also linesman when Man Utd and Arsenal had the infamous 20 odd man brawl in the late 80s.

That’s the one. His defence at the hearing about the Man U-Arsenal brawl was that he was watching the keeper :)
31 December 2011 at 7:53 pm #76652I’m quite sure he did the line for a match at Springy as a late replacement. Was quite surprised as I didnt think a local could officiate his local side.

1 January 2012 at 1:34 pm #76673Top bloke, best ammy ref by a million miles – well deserved
1 January 2012 at 4:04 pm #76675I might be wrong but I think Dave has got this award for his work at the DWP, not for football. But that’s just an uneducated guess from looking at the awards list.
When Dave was writing all those match reports I was the Fixtures Secretary for the Wigan Ammy league and became very good mates with him. He used to describe my (infrequent) goals for Hindley Celtic in spectacular terms. I remember him describing the winning goal in a 1-0 victory as a “30 yard thunderbolt from Celtic’s star striker, Chris Griffin”. Remarkable for a number of things, principal among them the fact that I didn’t even play in that game!!
Great bloke, and definitely the best ref in the WAL. Whatever the reason he has been given this award it is no doubt fully deserved.
Oh, and if you’re reading this Dave, I have finally found those scrapbooks and I’ll drop them off at some point.
1 January 2012 at 4:25 pm #76676Griff – I worked with Dave at both Brocol House and Griffin House. Despite what you read in the Daily Mail, although the Department will have nominated him (and hence the award citation quotes the Department) there has to be “something else” – not just long service (unless you’re in the higher echelons of course).
This is usually some form of community involvement, so I am absolutely sure that the award will have reflected or been “boosted by” his involvement in local football.

I hope it is GL, much better to get it for his football than pushing a pen ;)
1 January 2012 at 5:21 pm #76682They don’t give them for pushing pens, Griff. I pushed a pen for many years and doubled it up with walking briskly holding piece of paper.
I never got one. :P

So when you both worked at Griffin House which one of you was Griff’s butler ?
