Can’t sleep
I love a bit of non league football, well all football really, and I consider myself lucky to live 5 minutes walk away from Chorley FC. so often I go along to watch “The Magpies “.
Its cheap entry, good beer, no parking, and, old school terracing, very old school, you can’t see a blinking thing. You can also change ends at half time, so long as you don’t stand on any grass.
They have amazing pies! Stupendous steak pies, made by Bowens (see “life of pies”), but pies are another story. But its not the same.
I find myself constantly checking my phone for Latics updates, which is very ignorant to the mags.
When Chorley score I clap my hands and shout “hurrah”, not quite the same as “YesGetthefu**kinyafu**inbeautyIloveyouGarrrnerHoughtonTaylorEllingtonF**kinYesClonk (“sorry Martin”)Yes, text text text! Celebration I usually have.
When Chorley conceded I say “oh dear, never mind”, not “dagger in my heart its first shot they’ve had better be tripple pie chips beer and sex tonight “or there’s hell to pay”” that I feel when Latics concede.
Ultimately, Idon’t care about the result, win or lose.
Its just not the sameIts an honest game in non league, the players get mud on their knees and play good football, nobody dives and just plays for the love of playing, everyone does their bit for the club and its all with a smile on each face.
For all its good, I can’t feel bad,….because….
….It just ain’t my Latics

24 March 2019 at 10:05 am #177594Some of those lads who love playing are on just shy of a grand a week mind! Next season Chorley could be two tiers from us.
24 March 2019 at 11:41 am #177595Does anyone from Wigan watch us or is everyone from Chorley and Preston?
24 March 2019 at 2:14 pm #177597I am Wigan born & bred egg but have become a runcornian the past 15 years.
Edward’s,I live within a 5 minute walk to runcorn town FC. I have only ever watched the last 20 mins of a game & got in for free. Yes! The standard was terrible. But what I did witness during my brief view was 22 “honest” footballers just playing for their pure love of the game.
24 March 2019 at 3:01 pm #177598Now Bowens pies are good pies.
24 March 2019 at 4:36 pm #177600If that standard was terrible you never saw me play in the pub league! I could kick with both feet so that made me a rarity, I got stuck in though and earned the nickname “Filthy Edwards”.
Its evil when you play in the pub leagues, people genuinely want hurt you if you play well. You have to be made of iron to then play in a Saturday team, I was never good enough or tough enough for that level.
I had a team mate though who was a proper player, a total superstar compared to me. He made a career in non league and played for Altrincham in the conference, but he never got close to league football, not even under Kenny Swain!
Anyway,my long winded joke isYou have to be a really really good player, before you can be called a sh1t one
24 March 2019 at 5:10 pm #177604I went to watch Ashton Athletic yesterday.
Good afternoon out, and one huge advantage over EFL.24 March 2019 at 5:29 pm #177609That is a beautiful site, I want one!
Can I ask what ale it was?
24 March 2019 at 5:47 pm #177611Ordinary John Smith’s I’m afraid, but the fact you could stand outside watching the game with it was wonderful
24 March 2019 at 5:54 pm #177612I think we must be one of the few countries where can’t have a pint and watch the game.
Still smoke in Germany whilst watching.24 March 2019 at 6:54 pm #177614Understand why it was stopped but that was a long time ago now. Cant see why it cannot be reinstated possibly trial low risk games.
24 March 2019 at 8:06 pm #177615Does anyone from Wigan watch us or is everyone from Chorley and Preston?I’ve often wondered this myself, especially during the 80s.
I was born in Wigan but really grown up in Chorley and worked in nearly every local town except Wigan so I don’t know what the Wigan mentality really is.All I do know is a lot more Wiganers should be watching us on a match day.
24 March 2019 at 8:18 pm #177618Does anyone from Wigan watch us or is everyone from Chorley and Preston?Bit like the goons Ad. Nobody from wigan watches them either.
24 March 2019 at 10:20 pm #177624Understand why it was stopped but that was a long time ago now. Cant see why it cannot be reinstated possibly trial low risk games. They did try this at Chorley’s friendlies a couple of years ago, I don’t know how they sorted the licensing out. It was too much! I kept going back for another and another, I was pissed by halftime and spent a fortune going to a non league friendly!
A week later it was the 14-0 against Chorley’s youth team (who played with a lot of credit), well you can guess how that went! I went to the bar and missed two goals, there wasn’t even a que. I did still manage to kick the ball to Paul Cook before the game, I’ve not lost it Cookie!
So, theres a good reason for not having a bar open during the game.
24 March 2019 at 10:45 pm #177625So any sensible law abiding football fan cant enjoy a alcoholic drink during a low risk football match reducing a surge at half time and increasing profits for caterers cant be trialed as Edward’s would get pissed.
Gosh what’s going on on here! -
