My parents were brought up to believe that the better things in life were “not for the likes of them”. They were hard working, honest, and brought their kids up to be the same. The only thing I can criticise them for is that they “knew their place” which was at the back of the queue. They spent their lives touching their forelocks to people who they regarded as their betters, when in fact most of them were not fit to lace their boots.
Supporters of some “big” clubs regard themselves as our betters. They think that we should know our place and spend our spare moments touching our forelocks to them. They are bitter because we are occupying a place amongst the football elite which they think should be theirs by divine right. They have not been able to move us by fair means so their cohorts in the press are trying to undermine the fabric of the club by printing scurrilous and ill-informed articles about us.
Do not feel dispirited by the articles and the constant remarks about our attendances. Never apologise for what we are. Be proud of our achievements and see these attacks for what they are: fits of jealousy from pathetic losers. See the funny side of the situation and laugh at their childish reactions to our success.
Perhaps the supporters club should adopt the nickname “Wigan’s Chosen Few” to really get up their noses (apologies if someone has already suggested this).
