There’s people wanting his head on a stick, there’s people defending him to the hilt and there’s not many inbetween.
I don’t quite want his head on a stick but when you look at the stats and the horrendous tonkings we’ve had, it’s got to be time for a change. Of course that will never happen as long as there’s air in Mr. Whelan’s lungs, as he’s already described Roberto as the best young manager in Europe, but it would happen at 95% of other clubs. Blind faith and sentimental loyalty, admirable though they are, have no place in (especially) Premiership football.
I’m on the ‘he’s got to go’ side and I find it hard to see how anything can or will change whilst he’s in charge. I can’t even see what it is he’s trying to achieve. Even if the legendary and mythical Warchest was opened for him, he’d be lucky to attract anyone after what happened last season.
Worse sides kept us up this season, there is no doubt about that. I doubt we’ll be as fortunate in that respect next season. Change it now, I say.
10 May 2010 at 1:20 pm #32724You say look at the stats, apart from the horrendous tonkings, OK which stats?
This isn’t the lowest place we have ever finished (90th is, 17th in Prem/England).
We haven’t recorded our lowest goals scored.
We have acheived (by whatever means) exactly what the target was.
We have earned the right (even without ignoring the tonkings) to be in the Premier League next season due to acheiving more points than 4 other teams.
We are still financially Ok.I can’t even see what it is he’s trying to achieve. Even if the legendary and mythical Warchest was opened for him, he’d be lucky to attract anyone after what happened last season.
So you can’t see how he has changed the style of our play since last season?
10 May 2010 at 1:24 pm #32726There is no way I could defend the result on Sunday, this cannot happen again. Bobby has had his first season and go lucky, with 30 points to stay up it would have taken a poor manager not to keep us up this season.
The obvious problems we have in the team are plain to see, we need to strengthen defensively, but buy a midfielder who can kill the game and tackle. Diame is a class act, but needs to be allowed freedom to go forward, he fails to stop midfield runs and then gives up too easily. We need a stronger strike force and back four who can play together as a unit.
The challenge is for Bobby to clean out the squad and bring a some experience in, maybe a full back or two who can stop crosses….. If this continues then off with his head….

Possession is King right ! What you do in the final third means nothing to the paying public then does it not ! And what about the goals that we shipped ? You couldn’t help it could you when you mentioned finishing 90th ! Things have changed since then my friend, it is a completely different ball game and by all accounts we aint very good at it !!

To be fair, I can see how the style of play has changed and it is for the better from a purist’s view but to execute it, you need top class players and we’re just a bit too thin on the ground with them. If you’re not in the top eight, you have to be cloggers, hoofers and battlers. I admire his ethos but it won’t keep us up next season.
As for the rest of your post, there’s more positive spin on it than Warne and Muralitharan could muster together ;)

I would tend to agree with all of that.

Unfortunately, with maybe a couple of exceptions, Bobby’s record of trying to strengthen the squad, thus far, has fallen woefully short of the mark.

Oh I don’t know. maybe over the summer he’ll buy a couple more players from Swansea tell us how great & capable of playing in the top flight they are & then several months later when they’ve proved to be total pig swill he’ll tell us he never wanted to play them so soon & he was let down by putting his faith in the crap that is already here
Or maybe he’ll sign yet more players he doesn’t think are ready quite yet to play top flight football but who he hopes will be several months down the light & fingers crossed the crap we’ve got here already will carry us through till that time
or maybe he’ll sign someone on loan from a “big 4” club, never play him & then state he wants them back next season too10 May 2010 at 4:20 pm #32770i think bob is a nice bloke, but cack manager
10 May 2010 at 10:50 pm #32859Who would be his replacement if he was sacked, that’s the big question.
10 May 2010 at 11:05 pm #32860Give the bloke another season. At least!
When we have played well we have played some of the best football we have seen. When we have played bad, at times I will admitt, it has been hard to watch as a fan.
If he finds consistency and gets the team to fight harder when things aren’t going well and he will do fine.

I think a couple of “Striker’s”are the no1 priority for next season.Rodders apart what we have are not good enough for the Premier League and never will be.Lets be right take a chance on a couple young promising forwards and lets be honest they could’nt do worse than Scotland and Moreno 39 games 1 goal between um

Lets be honest here the main thing is to sort the defence out. simple stop the goals against us and were half way there.spud yead did it last year. our keepers must be sick of picking the ball out back of the net.the prem will end up with a machine that just flips the ball straight out the net to the half way line   :roll:11 May 2010 at 12:47 am #32895There is no way I could defend the result on Sunday, this cannot happen again. 11 May 2010 at 1:00 am #32897Each team starts on zero points next season, there’ll be nowhere for Martinez to hide, isn’t that what everyone wants, the management and players to be accountable?
Starting the season with a new manager would let underperforming players continue as is, that is until the new boss realises what Martinez does now.
