      ..this absolutely stinks.

      Taken from official site…..
Does your kid want to be the official Latics mascot at Swansea?
Then if you and your kid have transport to the game and have tickets then e-mail this address…… :teasing-blah:

What a load of bollux and cheap gesture by the club. Surely they can cough up a ticket for mascot and a parent / guardian plus throw in the price of a coach.

This just shows how amateur our club is, they have obviously left this very late posting it 5 days before the game, but asking them to fork out for a ticket?? That bloody well stinks IMO.

why should a freeloader who may never ever go to away matches get a trip before someone who is paying to go ?

i dont know where your source is for this story but the only thing the club can be accused of is badly wording its request, we dont usually get offered an away mascot place and on the occasions it has been it has been filled by supporters club members that had paid to go.

Edit: Started this before LMB replied, but clearly he doesn’t want you in the darkside club ;)

I think you’re bang out of order though.

As LMB says, a youngster who is already going should absolutely get first refusal. Me and my lad are going, but at thirteen and 5’8″ he’s not interested in holding hands with Gary Caldwell anymore :o

If he was younger and wanted to do it then he should get the chance ahead of others. Where I do differ with LMB is that I think this is something that actually happens quite often. He got the chance at Watford in the pouring rain and Highbury for the Carling Cup semi final, so it’s nothing new.

Now get back over to the lightside and be quick about it, or you’ll end up like Bickymon.

unless it has changed, it ISN’T/ WASN’T something that “happened quite often” – the supporters club, get and we in return offer, some teams free tickets for use of families to games,
i have been to both bolton and arsenal for coach cost only, and a mascot was chosen both times off the coach, bolton and arsenal do it, i am not to sure about others, we seem to offer all clubs the opportunity for their fans to have a mascot, cant say i’ve ever seen it at old trafford, anfield or stamford bridge.

Crossed wires maybe? I was thinking only of the mascot bit, not the free tickets.

My lad has been mascot a disproportionate number of times (twice at home and three times away inc. Bolton and Arsenal) and I’ve never been a member of the supporters club. I have responded to requests via email/website (directly from the club) appealing for mascots to away games which is why he got these opportunities.

I’m not saying make this open for any free loaders to take advantage of, its the last thing that should happen. However, via the proper channels “the old JJ’s club” membership or similar. Get the names in the hat and give um a proper day out. Don’t leave it till 5 days before the game to sort out. I can see this young mascot walking out at the liberty with their 3 year old latics top on with Zaki on the back or in the new strip but 6 sizes too big for him / her.

I remember going to west ham a few years back on the supporters club coach and the young lad travelling down with his dad was the mascot on the night. There were roadworks all the way down and it looked like we may miss the KO, the little lad was dressed ready on the coach thinking his chance had gone. As it happened we landed just as the players were coming out and he was ushered onto the pitch to hold hands with the captain all hassled up.

This is what I mean, that lad and his dad should have been better looked after, I know you can’t plan for roadworks but he should have been down at Upton Park via some other means feeling part of the team.

I only hope that the lucky kid and parent get refunded for their tickets and travel as part of this “Rare Opportunity” as it says.
Me thinks somebody has backed out.

In the main, and certainly from our experience, the mascots get a blinding day out.

At Wigan the mascots go into the Presidents Club area where they and a parent arrive two hours before kick off. They all go on a mini tour before going into the changing rooms and getting autographs and pictures taken. They then get introduced on stage, give a score prediction and get a medal to commemorate the day. Then, obviously they run out with players before kick off.

Arsenal was even better. We did all the same things as at Wigan and a week later a framed photo of the captains, officials and mascots arrived with the game details, names, etc. typed up beneath it. Totally free.

Watford left us pitchside in the rain and then sent ‘proofs’ of photos through the post with a price list.

Every club is different, but Wigan are amongst the best. Lots of the mascots are chosen via the junior latics website and competitions too.

I have to say I am concerned that the Darkside havent been critical from the weekend, new keeper looking like the old kirkland, midfield going missing, bob playing Di Santo and Gomez, no real new signings. Dodgy 1 each draw against a promoted team, when the other 2 teams got pumped 4-0.

All I hear of criticism is the mascot. Times have changed.

It is only one game ! I thought Di Santo worked his socks off and got into some decent positions. Al Habsi as we also saw at City last season has a blooper in him but hey don’t most keepers ! Even Watson took a couple of half decent corners. Gomez however was utter pants and should now be dispensed with ! Come on Bob don’t be going all Wenger on us !! Some of the back four clearances were ropey and at times they looked quite unsettled. The midfield was misshapen some what with a massive void down the right that needs addressing. At the end of the day it did look like 2 teams that will be down there throughout the season and until the better teams come to town the jury is out ! I fear we ( The Darkside ) will be back anon !!
