Moses has been ruled out with a groin injury, will Charlie start? Who else is there? ………..
And Gomez is not an accepted answer on this thread.
20 August 2010 at 1:30 pm #43317And Gomez is not an accepted answer on this thread. Why? One of the big complaints from last week was that we created NOTHING from midfield. Gomez at least offers that when he is allowed to play in the hole rather that being stuck out wide. In the absence of Moses we have no-one else who can do it. It will be a long, backs-to-the-wall afternoon on Saturday.
20 August 2010 at 1:40 pm #43321The problem is that Martinez doesn’t seem to play anyone in “the hole” role.
Its a 4-5-1 which allegedly when we attack becomes a 4-3-3 so he’s in effect asking his wingers to become additional forwards
His 3 central midfielders are in effect orthodox midfielders & there’s no place for an “in hole” playerAs such, even if i thought that Gomez was good enough, Bobby can’t play him in his preferred role coz it doesn’t exist
Or at least that’s what it looks like to me coz I’ve never seen the “in the hole” role played Bobby’s way before
20 August 2010 at 1:50 pm #43325N’Zogbia shouldn’t even be on the bench.
He has no desire to play for us, and if Martinez picks him….well, it just shows a complete weakness.
I’d sooner someone like Callum McManaman get the nod, or maybe move McCarthy out right? Rather than start the big-headed French want-away.
Imagine if he played him, and N’Zogbia was to clearly perform with a ‘not-ar*ed’ attitude. It would make a mockery of Martinez.
20 August 2010 at 1:52 pm #43326At least when Gomez is one of those central three, we have some chance of a creative spark. When he’s not, we are bereft of any creativity.
And yes, I have my tin hat on and no, I haven’t been drinking. I know he has many, many faults but I genuinely believe we have no-one (potentially) better in that role. Koumas could probably have done it too, had he not been too lazy to read the instructions.

I like Gomez. I like him a lot. I can see he has really good technical ability, and the ability to play a slide-rule through ball.
But he’s just the type of player Latics fans, or a majority, shall we say, love to hate. I’d much sooner him start tomorrow, than N’Zogbia. Martinez risks a real ‘hissy-fit’ from the Frenchman. You have no idea how far he will take his ‘attitude’ if he get’s picked.20 August 2010 at 2:56 pm #43335I would seriously consider playing Gomez. Not for his ‘slide rule’ passes, but because he attracts so many fouls. As someone else said, Saturday is going to be backs to the wall time, so a few free kicks to slow things down/break things up could be just what we need.
As for N’Zogbia, it’s doing my head in.
He’s obviously our best player by far and so I want him in our team and staying with us. I even think there’s a chance of it happening, at least until January. If he plays Saturday, but with a poor attitude, it could put others off him. If he plays with an “I’m in the shop window” attitude, he might just earn his move. However, with so little time left of the transfer window it might all be too late for him.
I know he has a reputation for petulance, but until recently he appears to have been a model pro for us and even expressed his gratitude to Wigan for taking him in the first place.
He might just remain with us for one more window and try to earn his move.
20 August 2010 at 3:08 pm #43339Gomez is a player that you can see has it “up there” but his speed of thought & movement is way too slow for this division
Personally I’d hate to see him as an orthodox midfielder at Latics at the moment coz it would just make our midfield even more lightweight, powder puff and non-committal than it is now.
I also think that he’s shown time & time again that he quite simply isn’t a right winger as VAT suggests putting him there tomorrowPut simply if he’s ever going to be a success at Latics he has to play “in the hole” where he can drift about & try not to get picked up in order to give himself the amount of time & space he needs when he gets the ball to be able to do something with it without getting caught in possession.
To be honest he has exactly the same “faults” that could be levelled at Bobby when he played
Just as a bit of a side note, despite me believing him to be too lightweight I think that by far & away his best game in a Latics shirt was the away game at Stoke last season where they kicked him from pillar to post & (despite the Clayhead crowd giving him grief for over-acting) he dusted himself down & got on with itAs for N’Zogbia – I’d play him without a second’s thought tomorrow. We can only go off the club’s word about what happened last week & as far as they are concerned it was simply a matter of him handing in a transfer request 2 days before the start of the season, Bobby wasn’t happy with the timing & he dropped him coz he didn’t think he’d be mentally right for the game
This week he’s (allegedly) knuckled down, got on with things & accepted the fact that he will be allowed to leave as & when Latics get a bid which meets their valuation of him & not before then, when he decides, to a club & for a price that the buying club decidesSo for me that’s it end of story – Lee McCulloch handed in a transfer request a few years back & by his own admission kicked up a hell of a stink to try & be allowed to leave. He was still picked
Stuart Barlow handed in a transfer request in the play off final season but he was still picked
Neill Rimmer used to hand in a transfer request on an almost daily basis for a few seasons & he was still picked (when fit)
They’re just 3 I can think of off the top of my head & I’m sure there are plenty more that people can remember. I don’t see the N’Zogbia situation of the last week as being any different20 August 2010 at 4:36 pm #43347Didn’t actually suggest putting him there tomorrow, Tyldesley.
I was merely discussing him.
20 August 2010 at 5:03 pm #43351I would play him as the central of the midfield 3 with orders to be as creative as possible. If we defend for 90 minutes, a minimum of 4-0 is nailed on in my view so we may as well go down with a fight. I’d prefer 2-8 to 0-4, to be honest*
* unless our 2 come right at the end when Chelsea are down to 8 men having rested almost a third of their team for the next match
20 August 2010 at 5:44 pm #43355Apologies VAT!!

Central, as in just behind the striker, not just in front of the back four?
We’re going to need some steel in the middle and he just doesn’t give us that.
20 August 2010 at 6:59 pm #43367Woah, I said Gomez aint an accepted answer. Hes not good enough, end of! I wouldnt mind so much if he actually ran his heart out and put the effort in but he doesnt.
I think N’zogbia on the bench with McCarthy on the right and Hugo on the left is the best bet. My preferred line up….Kirkland
Stam Boyce Alcaraz Figueroa
Diame Thomas
McCarthy Watson Rodallega
Boselli

My point being that the other two in there can do that – they offer nothing else going forward – and Gomez can be left free to weave some creativity further upfield. Of course, I wasn’t suggesting he plays in front of the back four – I’m daft but I’m not thick. ;)
