Its getting ridiculous now. Clubs are calling games off left right and centre citing covid and an inability to raise 13 players from their combined first, reserve, U23, U18 squads, getting a little rest, then coming out refreshed against other sides who have bent over backwards to raise a side.
A two-week circuit break is needed for all clubs to give them a chance to isolate for 10 days (and get jabbed), have a bit of light training and come back with a full round of midweek fixtures on 11/12 January where teams play, even if its the kids or the coaching staff that take the field.
Obviously, there are a few clubs who will have to play an FA Cup game a couple of days before, but as most clubs field squad men these days, it shouldnt have a huge impact on the league programme.

I do think it’s odd that Accrington have asked for the New Year’s Day game to be cancelled. They played last night with covid cases and five first teamers out injured ,why did they not ask for that game to be cancelled ?
I’m not surprised Accrington have suddenly got a bout of covid. They’ve been playing through at the moment and suddenly as they are about to face a fresh Wigan side, they think “fuck this – we’ll have a week off like everyone else”.
I wonder how many of these L1 and L2 clubs will be calling off their money-spinning FA Cup ties next week?
The clubs need to take a stance, like they did with curtailing the season and decide whether to play or not play, and if not play, for how long and how they are going to get the fixtures in. Its in the hands of the 24 Chief Execs of the L1 clubs to get round a table and make a bloody decision.
My preference is for a two week break effective 2 January, where players do not go anywhere other than a vaccination centre, then come back for games on 15 January as planned. Only planned games lost are 5 January fixtures which get changed to the first weekend in May which becomes the end of the regular season. No games will be called off during international weekend in March and no players will be released for friendlies.

I don’t think a two week break is really going to help Latics. After tonight we will be three games behind Sunderland. Come back after two weeks off we will still have the same problem. We need the season to be extended but I don’t expect it to happen. I do think it’s odd that Accrington have asked for the New Year’s Day game to be cancelled.
