      Is it Maurice Whittle

      #120774

Teoflio Cublias was an absolute cracking player who would have played for one of the top European clubs if he was playing today, after the 1970 world cup Pele described him as his successor.

He scored one of the best ever world cup fee kick goals against Scotland in Argentina in 1978.

I was brought up with Maurice and his brother Fred. There aren’t many people who can claim to have scored the winning goal at Old Trafford, Maurice can ;)

As a 10yr old in 1985 I went to the Bobb Robson Soccer School at Robin Park for a week. Maurice Whittle was our groups coach for the week & our team won the tournament at the end.
I’d never heard of him like but he did bring in all his old shirts for us to train n one day & I wore the shirt of the team he played for in the US so I’m assuming it was that one

In other Latics related trivia about that week, future Latics legend Greg Strong was on my team

          bronxbomber,

You can renew an old acquaintance then, as Fred along with his Mrs is on one of our coaches going to Bruges just as they were for our Wembley trips.

          edit

They will be on the coach going on ‘le shuttle’ through the channel tunnel, as Mrs Whittle suffers from sea sickness.

Griff if you’re looking in, that’s a proper Darby & Joan Charabanc tour for you. ;)

But it shows what a caring lot we are.

I was also in that team Tyldesley. Had forgotten about Maurice showing us his shirts. Didn’t realise/remember that we had won the tournament at the end. Was that with Neil Critchley and Paul Blenkinship?

Thinking about it, my team may have been runners up – I know that each coach had 2 teams in the tournament & both Maurice’s teams got to the final & played each other. I also remember it going to a penalty shoot out & Greg Strong missed one for us (& cried) but then they missed the next one. How it ended up I don’t remember – I’ll have to check what’s on the trophy that my mum still has!!
The only lads I remember from our year being their were Nidge, Wayne Little, me & Danny Wilson to be honest, can’t remember Blenky or even yourself but my memory isn’t what it once was!! although there were also some lads there from the year above

I definitely remember Greg Strong and being shown shirts by someone who had played football (Maurice). Maybe because we were in the same year but different classes we might have played in separate teams.

Seems a zillion years ago now. Mr Lowe sneaking a quick cig in the changing rooms before P.E rings a bell.

I think he scored the ONLY fee (sic) kick goal against Scotland in Argentina in 1978 ;)

We may well have been on the same side – one way to find out is that if Greg Strong was on your team in that tournament then you were also on mine. We had a lad in the nets for us who was from Garrett Hall but the year above (Neil or Graham Hutchinson, I forget which was the oldest).
I also remember when it came to the shoot out, I hid out of the way so Maurice Whittle didn’t choose me!!

Harry McNally, Roy Tunks & A.N. Other Latics players turned up one day & I got all their autographs despite (as a season ticket holder at United at the time) not having a feckin clue who they were

I remember Greg Strong and remember playing against him when he was at Hesketh Fletcher.
I also remember him scoring the winner against Latics for Stoke when we had been 2-0 up.

My memory is shocking though. I had a random memory of an ex player showing us his Shirts that he had picked up in his career but hadn’t linked that to the soccer school we went too.
