standish when the members sold out they had no other option -the move to the new proffessional era had left them insolvent – the shares were a mess of pottage and they gladly took whelans money – it was the members and their elected commitee that finished orrell when the decision to turn proffessional was made.

Why post this now? Have you used up the list of non-league grounds you went to?

Loudmouth, you’re quite right in saying it was the decision to turn professional that was the downfall of the club, however, the decision was understandable, if naive.

Because they’d always competed against the likes of Bath, Wasps, Leicester etc, everyone connected with the club wanted that to continue, and when Whelan came along with the promise of investment in exchange for the sale of their membership, a majority were delighted with the prospect.

I’m sure those who sold their shares wouldn’t have done so if they knew what would eventually happen to the club.

As well as blaming the members the people of Orrell are to blame as they didn’t deserve a club of such a high standard. Despite being runners up in the RU 2nd tier in 2004 they averaged about 700 and I was one of them which was incredibly disappointing. The current England captain Nick Easter was an Orrell player also back then. The ‘accidental’ fire which destroyed the beautiful clubhouse in 2003 ripped the heart out of the club and a lot of people who enjoyed the per and post match ‘craic’ in there stayed away as a result which lead to a steady and some say ‘engineered’ decline.

Having said that the club has been reborn at amateur level and look to be pushing for promotion and had 3 teams out last week. They are now based at John Rigby for their matches and at the Delph Tavern in Tontine for their post match warm downs. Good luck to them!!

It was a crying shame to see a great club forced to play its fixtures on a school field and having pre match pints in a back street pub(albeit a good un-my old local).
The saddest part was the loss of a great social club and the facilities for local children. The club encouraged local youngsters to play for the club and the gates were always open to local youths.
          Tragic!

I was talked into training for th’Anvils by Tony Pegg and my ginger mate (who shares a name with one of Liverpool FC’s recent signings) a few years back. I lasted one session, and couldn’t walk for three days afterwards. I’m now merely a spectator – whenever I get the time. Do you get down to John Rigby to watch them?

Didn’t you know there is a substantial South American community in Up Holland?

If you listen carefully on a clear summer’s day, you can hear Spanish voices as the locals chase herds of Lamas across Ashurst Beacon?

No, not since they left Edge Hall Road but I will make the time to go and have a look. Might become a bandwagon jumper seeing they’re pushing for promotion lol! . The hard unpaid work various people are putting in such as reforming the youth setup etc deserves support so I’ll deffo have a wander down sometime.

TBH I don’t really understand the rules fully I’ll always be a football man but I enjoy watching it.
