I can’t believe that  :P
http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2012/jan/12/ipswich-paul-jewell-female-assistant
“I think everyone to a man thought it was a penalty. Unfortunately to every man, but not a woman. Although the referee didn’t have a good view, I thought the lineswoman, or whatever she’s called, had a great view.”
He later says: “The comments have been taken out of context” and “I’m not expecting any comeback from the authorities and would be disappointed if there are but if that arrives, I will defend it vehemently and will have the full support of the club in doing that”.
You’d almost think he was a Scouser, wouldn’t you?
12 January 2012 at 6:20 pm #77952The linesman’s a woman. What’s the problem here?
12 January 2012 at 8:19 pm #77967I shouldn’t need to explain this.
He was saying that every man saw it was a penalty – but she didn’t because she was a woman. If he’d just moaned (as he usually does) that the officials were incompetent that would have been OK. To then be dismissive about “lineswoman or whatever she’s called” just adds to the issue. He could have stuck with “assistant referee”.
The problem for us is that I’ve just heard a small feature on Five Live about this, and comment was made that Mike Newell a few years ago had said that there was no place for women in football. The presenter said “Mike Newell of course played with Paul Jewell at Wigan Athletic”.
12 January 2012 at 8:30 pm #77970No, you’re being too PC about it. The journalist said that everyone to a man thought it was a penalty and he replied “not to a woman” meaning the linesman/woman. Assistant referee is just a meaningless ego-massaging term for the linesman.

You’re spot-on there Old_Wolf. I heard this story on the sports news on Radio Lancashire while driving into work yesterday morning. Graham Liver seemed to make out that Jewell had made a sexist remark yet he seemed oblivious that on the same show they were running a feature on whether men or women make better bosses at work, so by his own interpretation he was inviting sexist remarks from the listeners. The whole PC thing has gone mad.
If some people had their way they’d either chop bits off the men or add bits on the women then paint us all the same colour so we’d have a truly equal society…madness.14 January 2012 at 2:49 am #78081Watched his interview on SSN re the assistant referees lines woman thingy. Have you seen his bonce?
I’ve clocked a few Harry comb overs in my time, but he takes the biscuit.
He’s invented a double harry comb over!! :lol:From Matlock to ManU

Bonce or no bonce, I (for one) preferred the Jewell era rather than the current Martinez one.

Amongst the best being the cup final and getting pished wet through at Brammell lane when we did that amazing final day escape from relegation.
The worst being the lack of any plan B whatsoever and that awful pump up field from the goalie to Lee Mac, that inevitably went into touch or headed on to their centre back.
Glad to see PJ has gone on to better things at Derby and now at Ipswich. He is my odds on favourite to get the old elbow and the weary trapes down to Brocol house.I for one prefer the football we are trying to play under Martinez. :woohoo:
