You all seem universally in agreement that the manager needs to be relieved of his duties ASAP. However, what I read is that he wants paying off in full, having not long since signed a long deal, and that is the stumbling block.

If that’s the case, wouldn’t it be better if he was put on gardening leave and paid his weekly wage until either his contract expires or he is hired by another club? Barnsley did this with Stendel, and managed to not only not pay him off in full, but screw some money out of Hearts when they hired him!

Cook will be hired by someone else before his contract would have ended. If he sat out the entire 3-4 years, he would be forgotten by the football world and end up unemployable, so it would be in his interests to get another job ASAP.

Correct. Cost 4 million to pay him off. Board don’t wanna put more money in and emphasis should be on new centre forward surely.

I doubt it’s 4 million to pay him off but id rather go with the same squad and a new boss over the same manager and same squad plus one extra striker to be honest.

If the board comes to the conclusion that he needs to go (which you would think they should at this point), his salary really shouldn’t be a stumbling block. His contract is a sunk at that (this) point. Granted, even though those on the board should know the concept of a sunk cost, in reality, people get emotionally tied to decisions and have trouble actually separating the sunk cost from the decision making process. I think it’s fairly clear at this point that they are better off without Cook in charge. Without knowing the details of Cook’s contract, if they want to avoid a large payout now, they should be able to re-assign him (put him on gardening duty) and pay out his salary as normal.

I am all in favor of that.

Moving forward, Wigan really needs to hire a manager who is willing to think outside the box & do things differently since we have less resources than others at this level – that’s the only way to thrive. You can’t do it having an old time dumb jock who is set in his ways/predictable and just being conservative or doing what everyone else does.

Cook started the season with the lump it up to the big lad which clearly doesn’t work for Latics and our squad.
Since Moores injury no one can deny our performances have improved no end. What we lack is a goal scorer.

For me Garner, Lowe, Windass dont have that goal scorers mindset. The ability to turn half chances into goal scoring chances and goals.

As much as I’ve seen, Geldhart has this in abundance. He isn’t scared at running at defenders and just as important he can see a pass as well.

Now with the team screaming from the top of the stands for a player to finish all the good work and injuries toboot Cook “still” thinks it’s best to keep the bubble wrap and cotton wool on Geldhart.
Am I saying start him ? no, just stop expecting him to perform miracles with no time left in a game.
Cook has highlighted that he doesnt have the bottle to use him by subbing Robert’s 15 minutes before Geldhart. He did more in the 15 minutes than the rest of the frontline did in 77mins.

This falls at the feet of Cook who again makes the wrong decision and bottled it. Ok he’s 17 but I think most will agree he’s 17 going on 21 physically and mentally with his feet firmly on the ground.

If the board feel not paying off Cooks contract fully outweighs the chance of going down then there in for an awful shock because 3/4 of the team will be gone and we face a far harder and more expensive job rebuilding a team (as we do) just to get out League One.

            Sack Cook,
            Pay him,
            New manager fresh idea’s,
            Sell Moore,
Bring in a loan forward or buy,
            Give Geldhart more minutes,
And hopefully stay in the Championship.

I personally think if we fail without Cook at the helm then at least we can say we tried because the other option the way were going is a 100% guaranteed relegation.
Theres a transfer window near let’s hope huge changes are made. I think the board will keep him and support him in the transfer window.
That’s all fine but like a new jigsaw puzzle at Christmas,
It s not the jigsaw that’s at fault when the piece’s are scattered on the table the problem is the user who doesn’t have a clue how to piece it together.
Cooks subs and team selection this season speaks for itself he is not up to the task, it’s a level too much

So would you advocate paying him off in full, even if it costs £2m plus and restricts the new manager’s ability in the transfer window, or would you put him on gardening leave and pay him his current salary until he finds another job?

Personally, I would pay him weekly until his contract is up or he finds another job. As I said before, its probably the cheaper option, and Cook would be foolish to stay unemployed for that long as he’d beome a forgotten man. It didn’t work out very well for Alan Curbishley.

Just bite the bullet and sack him, pay him off and cut all ties.
A clean slate with a new manager is what this club needs.

Putting him on gardening leave would be a breach of contract.
People talk as though teh key element of a contract is its length, but that is pretty small stuff in general terms.
The contents of the contract are what defines it – the remuneration package, what the duties are, responsibilities etc
Changing those would constitute breach of contract, and leave the club open to further litigation.
You hear of people in business being put on gardening leave but they are usually happy to do so – they are being paid for doing nowt.
For a football manager to be asked to look after the Under-8s would ruin his chances of future employment at any reasonable level.

I agree, but the club won’t do this until they have a man in place. If they make the same mistakes as they did with Joyce and Mackay then relegation on top of paying off two managers and possible backroom teams etc would cripple us. We can survive a relegation but not that and two payoffs as well.

You may not agree with the idea but that is the basics of it.

It shouldn’t cripple us, when all said and done the individual owners of the club have enough dosh to buy a small country, putting their private cash Latics is another thing.
There might be one owner listed on the deeds but I bet in reality this is not the case.
They should look at it as a bad day in the Hong Kong office and cut ties with Cook asap.the longer they leave it the further we’ll be left at the bottom till it becomes a point of no return
