Standish, Sephton’s right, we could be playing Rochdale in League 1 by 2012/13….difference is without Whelan’s involvement in the 90’s we could eventually have gone the way of Aldershot and playing Dale would have been an achievement not a disappointment.
As for fleecing the club, making money in the Prem must be easy I mean look at the total debt of all the clubs…..its huge (even without Utd and L’pool). Still go on believing we should be making/spending millions on gates of 15,000 paying League 1 prices.
Whelan has let us down at times with the price we get for players, but Im not sure what else he’s supposed to do.

I think the Boselli move for £6.2 million was what Martinez and every fan wanted – a big signing. After pre-season; I have never seen moral of everyone so high. It was too good to last … 4-0 Blackpool.

If Whelan carried on pushing the club forward and let a foreign company pump the money in while he still runs the club …. the European dream of 2009 could of been a reality.
Insted we let Bruce, Brown and Cattermole go to relegation rivals and TOTALLY change our style of football.

Yeah, I agree with that but haven’t we sold enough players ?No. The club is still losing money and without Prem football, it’ll lose even more. Maybe it’s the wages of the players, though I doubt it because even though we may feel some players (past and present) are overpaid … we need to compare ourselves to other clubs around us and look at what their lads are on.

No, we haven’t sold enough players, because we have to make money on players every year to remain solvent. That means, we do have to sell players every year.
No, we would not earn as much money if we were relegated, but that’s the gamble you take by selling your best players to remain in the league. Buy low, sell high. If we were relegated though, we’d get a parachute payment and the high earners would leave so it all evens itself out a bit.
Yes, players and staff salaries are the main outgoing cost at Wigan. Yes, other clubs pay an awful lot more to their players, but they also have an awful lot more money coming into the club than Wigan do.

Did you know that John Benson left the club after Martinez accused him of letting Sunderland buy Boselli by returning from scouting saying “he won’t fit in our system we play”. The reason behind Bobby saying that John was allowing Bruce to get Boselli is that Eric Black was on the same plane as John Benson. Whelan felt that buying Boselli would be a great way of backing Martinez, and also getting one over on Steve Bruce.

i dont know about the link with sunderland for boselli -but i do know (via a player and member of the coaching staff)
that benson told whelan not to sign boselli and the following bust up with martinez was the reason benson left the club,but i thought that was common knowledge,i know it was posted on here at the time.Standish, you’re just repeated what I said in my previous post :?Where? No, really, where?
