He’s merely pointing out that he “use” to call it Chingalings, that was the era he and millions of others grew up in, wrong now but it happened so live with it.
He is not saying he still uses this term nowdays he’s drawing reference to his past, good or bad ? it doesn’t matter, it happened or shall we wipe every reference ever made to other races and cultures through time gone by and never draw back so we can all move forward ?.
Standish , so you are saying it is wrong to say ” When I was younger I called it the Chinky chippy” ?
I commend him for saying it as it was , there’s not dinks/bangs/dents/nicks/scrapes in his armour . . . . I didn’t want to offend you and the 1.4 billion chinese reading this6 December 2014 at 11:56 am #136515I think the point is being missed here spectacularly by some and the flames being fanned by others.
He isn’t saying ‘I normally call the Chinese, Chinamen/Chinks/Chingalings’
What he said is a statement from the past which was said while trying to repair some damage from previous comments, with a Jewish newspaper. It is merely an old man reminiscing and trying to explain, no harm was meant then or now.
How people can find offence from something somebody used to say 50 years ago is beyond me. As I’ve said elsewhere, it isn’t like he said ‘I used to wear an SS uniform and gas Jews’.
6 December 2014 at 12:00 pm #136516On a lighter note does big Dave have a gaff in Brazil?
6 December 2014 at 1:52 pm #136518Why does he need to say anything further?
He put his foot in it with his clumsy way of trying to defend Mackay and I can understand his motives for doing so at the time, up to a point.
Anything else he says on the matter even if it’s reminding everyone of how it used to be 50 years ago is just making the situation worse.
The racist card is the easiest one to play and he seem incapable of realising that. He’s just setting himself up for ridicule every time he opens his mouth on the subject.
God forbid he’ll get another round of applause today.
Just shut up.

Why God forbid he’ll get another round of applause? He’s bang on with everything he’s said. It’s the media who are the Nazis. Why would you not stick up for one of your own against them?
This is Latics against everybody else, shouldn’t be any infighting over this.6 December 2014 at 4:45 pm #136524Why does he need to say anything further?

This is Latics against everybody else, shouldn’t be any infighting over this.
Whether you or anybody else think he’s bang or not is not the point. He’s making the situation worse by somehow trying to justify that back in the sixties it was OK to say these things because they were in common use and nobody objected. Well I’m sure people did object but their objections were never heard or acted upon, a bit like the indecent activities that were going on back then that weren’t acted upon.
I don’t believe Whelan is racist and I’d like to think that the round of applause he got in the last home game was given in support of that. However, the more he opens his mouth on the subject and the more the crowd should happen to applaud him for doing so the more damaging it becomes. The club really will be in danger of being perceived as racist.
That is what is a stake here.
6 December 2014 at 4:57 pm #136525The press and anyone else can say what the fuck they like about this whole sorry tale but it wont effect me, water off a duck’s back! We’ll have that socialist leftie liberalism toss pot Stuart Lee and his pseudo intellectual sycophantic fans jumping on the bandwagon next, can’t be doing with smug cnuts like that!
6 December 2014 at 4:59 pm #136526I don’t think so and your comparisons is a load of tripe. I’ll go and ask my mum who is 84, to turn on my PC and do a bit of net surfing, she’ll not get past settling onto my computer chair. She has had a mobile phone that I bought her 10 years ago and she has not used it once, even though I show her what to do every time I see her.
We are still in the generation whereby our parents and grandparents are stuck in their old ways, Whelan is one of them. Until that generation has died off, we will still hear those comments / phrases that have been common talk for the majority of their lives. Until they have all died off, we will still hear “I’m not going to that blackie doctor, I cant hear what he says” , “What we having for tea a chink or an Indian”, “wheres mi mum gone dad?, shes run off with a black man”.
Me and you will not say any of those things, especially in public, because we know it is seen as racist. Do I think our parents / grandparents are racist? No I don’t, its their culture and they don’t see that these phrases may offend anyone.
That’s the point in question and is what Dave Whelan is trying to explain to the media and is ruffling some feathers up.
I wish all these people who have spent the last few weeks chasing Whelan like a pack of wolves, would put their energy to better use and sift out all the drug dealers and pedophiles FFS.
You’ve just contradicted your first post!
‘Me and you will not say any of those things, especially in public, because we know it is seen as racist.’
Correct! It is seen as racist, so Mr Whelan should not say it!
If the whole nation was of his generation, then fair enough. Nobody would bat and eyelid.
We know it’s racist, so does most of the country. Therefore, DW, who is in the public eye, should not say it!
No I’m not contradicting myself, the point I made is that it can be seen by others as racist, I, Dave Whelan and the majority of people in Wigan over 50, don’t see it as that and can tolerate things being said in our own social gatherings. Would we expect to hear it in the public domain?,probably not, but my grandparents would.
My kids and grand kids are being brought up to a whole new culture than me and my parents/ grandparents. It’s called moving generations and will continue to evolve long when we have gone.
I am now convinced you are thick as pig shyte. Do you really think back in the stone age that one day all the men stopped dragging their wives around by their hair? It probably took several hundreds of years to change that culture and I bet there was the period whereby 90% were holding hands and the other 10% were dragging wives around by their hair thinking it was alright.
I don’t condone what DW has said in the glare of the media, I just don’t think he should be hung drawn and quartered by the media, the FA and our own fucking supporters. Lets all be grown up about this and put it into perspective FFS.
From Matlock to ManU
What a journey!6 December 2014 at 5:06 pm #136527I have been defending him to the hilt. That he is only a bit older than me, and I know that such things were the norm etc etc etc. I keep saying that he is not calling people those names now, he’s just reflecting that’s how it used to be.
But I’m afraid I’m losing patience. He has no need to say anything now. Just keep quiet. Why does he give an interview with a Jewish newspaper that obviously has an agenda with what he has/is alleged to have said?
Please Dave – listen to the people in the club who are advising you, and trying to keep some control of the situation.
It is clear they are worried that our younger elements will repeat the songs sung at Sheffield, giving the press and authorities the right to say “See – youngsters have been influenced by his comments and think it’s OK to be racist”. The club’s statement yesterday warning about language is clearly a pre-emptive strike to the FA that we are doing all we can to avoid it.
But DW is not helping. Not in the tiniest bit.

This is Latics against everybody else, shouldn’t be any infighting over this.Seriously? You genuinely think he’s bang on with everything he said??
And since when is this Latics against the world? Let’s stick two fingers up at the establishment like we’ve been doing for years now through our football, but I’m not going to stick up for anyone dragging my club into such a mess for non-footballing reasons, epecially as it is clearly now having an impact on the field too.I don’t actually think he said anything as wrong this time, he was just stating a historical fact – just like someone might say “30-40 years ago we used to call Asians WOGs”, but why say it at all on top of everything that has gone on? Sheer stupidity and I for one will never stick up for one of our own acting in stupidity.
