Had to do a Donnelly for the title. Reading are on the verge of signing him on a 4 year deal. Can’t help but think to myself that is one missed from us.
19 June 2012 at 10:32 pm #89403I remember someone coming out with exactly the same kind of post last season when QPR bought SWP, Cisse, Barton and Boothroyde.

If you are saying that i suggested any of the other three then you had better start archiving because i have never rated any of the others and know i wouldnt have suggested any of them.

Not referring to you at all Yosser, I just remember a few on here went ballistic when QPR signed those players moaning for Britain about why we couldn’t get that type of player.
That ex Fulham loanee looked OK, but to be honest seemed like Connor Sammon but more jammy to me. :woohoo:http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w311/sniffy99/femme_56.gif

What a journey!20 June 2012 at 2:13 am #89411He’s been offered a reported 65K a week 4 year deal by Reading.
Shouldn’t this kind of stupidity be illegal?
Hope they get relegated.

And that’s why we ‘missed out’ on him.
20 June 2012 at 8:42 pm #89448Oh dear, Yeah that is idiotic, You would want a lot more for your buck on those kind of wages.

I suspect his £65k weekly equivalent pay cheque includes his signing-on fee, paid over duration of 4 year contract.
In which case, not too dissimilar from £6m + lower weekly (£30-£40k, e.g. Bosselli) on 3-4 year deal. Cash flow benefit, in fact !
Suspect that our free transfer man, Diame will on something not too dissimilar at WHU.
Suspect the Wigan climate and culture may have gone against us, bright lights of London…..
Still, would have been great addition to the team /squad.

Wrong. It CAN be a tough one. Nearby Alderley Edge / Wilmslow is not TOO shabby.
Ask Messrs Tim Cahill, Brad Friedel, Dietmar Haman (still resident) and Peter Crouch by way of example, not forgetting our own Ben Watson. Mo mo Diame would have little cause for complaint where the girls are concerned B)
Captain Caldwell a neighbour of SAF (MU)
If you don’t ASK, you don’t GET ….
Big city lights not ALWAYS preferred option (other things being equal)

Yes I am well aware that Wigan’s players tend not to live in the borough, and I very familiar with footballsville in Cheshire and who lives there (you missed out Davie Weir who lived there even when playing for Rangers – and use to commute to Glasgow for matches and training).
You can find lovely places to live no matter which team you play for – for reference see Yarm / Middlesbrough. A major issue IS (I’ll put it in capitals to stay with the theme of your post) geographical location; if you are an overseas player coming into the UK,or one who has been based around London in this case, and you are given the option of north west of England versus London, London will win nine times out of ten. They’re young lads and they don’t give a monkey’s about living in commuter-belt Cheshire. They see the opportunity to live in and around one of the world’s most vibrant, fashionable cities.
All the players you mentioned living in Alderley Edge aren’t exactly young players are they?
Wigan’s reputation also does not help – with low crowds, and a working class town reputation (whose very mention, let’s be honest, often raises a snigger from anyone outside the area).
Obviously it’s not always so cut and dried and takes into account the salary on offer, the team’s standing, it’s ambition, whether they have a friend already at the club etc, but I stand by my opinion that offered north west England against London (on equal salaries etc), London wins a vast majority of the time.
