As a cost saving exercise, 85 people were made redundant from Pompey today, as they’ve cut down on Football Academy staff, admin, the media team etc. Even some of the players offered to take pay cuts to try and help out.

Some of the people who lost their jobs were friends of mine (hence why I feel so strongly about this), and although they half expected it anyway, they were all livid about one thing:

The Chief Exec, is on an ‘alleged’ £1.2 million basic a year, plus bonuses, which meant he was ‘allegedly’, the third highest paid CEO in the Premier League. The man is in court for tax evasion in the next week, and although he’s been the puppet master at the club for a number of years, still puts the blame for the financial mismanagement of the club on other people’s doorsteps. Today, he wasn’t even present to tell these people they had lost their jobs, and instead sent one of his directors to do it for him. (Some of the people who have lost jobs are in senior positions, and deal with the CEO on a daily basis)

It’s an absolute disgrace that someone like Peter Storrie should even be allowed to be involved in a good, traditional football club like Portsmouth. If anyone needs booing at a game, it’s him.

Anyway, that’s my two penneth for the day.

Pompey are not out of the mire yet. They could still be wound-up on Monday.
And, for what it’s worth, Peter Storrie will not stay on as CEO much longer.

      Taken from the BBC Website:

“Mr Andronikou also said chief executive Peter Storrie – who has been criticised over his handling of Portsmouth’s troubles – had tendered his resignation. In the meantime, he has taken a 40% wage cut and currently remains in his post.

Mr Andronikou also said other staff had agreed to work fewer hours and that he would attempt to agree salary deferrals with others.

He also said “one or two” players had offered to take pay cuts.”

Whilst I dont doubt that Peter Storrie-Teller has a large part to play in the downfall of Portsmouth Football Club, I find the last line of what I have quoted utterly shocking. The likes of David James & John Utaka will continue to pick up £50K a week and upwards, whilst 85 staff pick up their P45s.

I wonder when the media will start to explore the role of their favourite cheeky chappie Mr. Redknapp in this horror story. Suspect the court case is holding them back at the moment.

The telling comment from the administrator came when he was asked why these 85 people had been targeted when (considering the lower salaries they were on) it is unlikely to make a significant dent in Pompey’s debt levels & he replied “I can’t because they are so well protected by the deals struck by the PFA” or words to that effect.
He then seemed to add as an after thought “And I wouldn’t have wanted to anyway”

That said however, if you are trying to sell a football club as a going concern you are hardly going to make redundant the very people who are the main focus of that club i.e. the players.

You would have hoped that more than 1 or 2 would have offered to take a pay cut but you can’t exactly blame them for not doing so. Its not their fault that they were offered contracts with money that didn’t exist

Suspect that the undercurrent of fraud/money laundering etc may yet become the big story at Portsmouth – we’ve already heard about large amounts of cash exchanging hands in offshore accounts which is why Redknapp is up for tax evasion

Quite right Tyldesley. Players have, in many cases, left home and families overseas to come and join Pompey, and as you say, it’s not their fault the club is struggling to honour their contracts.

The Peter Storrie saga is not over yet, and there will be more scandal wheeled out in due course.

What riled me was that some of the people who lost their jobs reported directly into Storrie, and some even classed him as a friend, yet he still didn’t have the bottle to face them and tell them in person.

The man’s a snake and he has played a big part in ruining a good football club.

David James is one of the players that offered to take a pay-cut. He offered to take a pay cut quite a while back.

No, I didn’t say that you said he wasn’t, did I?

With his pay-cut though, he may not be picking up 50k a week.

No – I think you mean “hair cut”
