I don’t think all is lost for this season despite our two hammerings. Our first half display against Chelsea showed promise, but our collapse in the second half was obviously alarming to say the least.
However let’s put a few things into perspective:
1) Our central defensive pair haven’t played together before and haven’t had a full pre-season due to the World Cup. Our captain is also still injured, which I think might be a good thing!2) Our new right back has only been with us for a couple of weeks.
3) We have at least two players (probably three in Figs, Rods and N’Zog) who want to leave and are obviously disrupting the dressing room.
Add to that the fact that our new players are new to the Premier League, is it so difficult to see why we’re struggling?
Some of our players aren’t going to be at the top of their game fitness wise, but I recall that when we signed some of our foreign lads in the past we gave them time to adjust to the Premier League (Rodders, Figs) not throwing them straight in.
It could well take our team 10 games before we see what they can really do…………….trouble is will that be too late?
It has been mentioned quite a bit on these pages before but fitness is also playing a big part in all of this. Look at Chelsea, probably the fittest team in the league with Ancellotti’s ex-Milan fitness techniques. He’s got a team of old men who looked like they could play another 90 minutes on Saturday.
We faded badly, but it would have been interesting to see how we would have fared had Ancelloti’s backroom staff run our pre-season.

Wigans last three league games – 18 conceded. None scored.
