i always thought football was supposed to entertain –
say anything you want about the pros and cons of martinez and if he will succeed or fail, but one thing is for sure there is not one person on that ground tonight -or come to think of it most of the games this season who can honestly hand on heart say they are not bored stiff by martinez’s negative formations and tactics.
forget losing week in week out it is the sheer mundane play that is driving the non season ticket holders away.
i liken it to watching 2 teams who i have no affinity with playing a friendly.
23 September 2010 at 2:35 am #47114The saddest irony is that with the right Manager playing different tactics we would be a different team…I really think we have a squad that has ability to do such much better….
El Habsi
Stam
Alcaraz
Gouhouri
A new left back
Diame
Nzogbia
McCarthy
Moses
Boselli (who should be judged only when he gets more than the scraps of chances he lives off in this system)
RodallegaNew Manager and 4 4 2… bingo

Wigan folk are fickle – they even do it at the rugby. If the team are losing, they stop coming through the turnstiles. If the team were playing long-ball dross but winning one nil regularly, they’d still turn up. Everyone wants to watch a winning team – and that’s why the average attendance started rising suddenly in the Championship and then suddenly shot through the roof in the first Premier League season. It was jack-all to do with the style of play, and more to do with a successful run of results.

granted standish that is part of the reason – but for christs sake this sideways/backwards stuff is an major, major part of it.
it is awful to watch and despite it being martinez’s ethos to play that way -he cant even get them to do it well – we pass it 20 times then hoof it or just knock it into touch – the technique in the side is nil and that i am afraid is what is developed on the training ground – and to be honest can you see martinez – jones – and barrow being able to show premiership players how to do that.23 September 2010 at 3:28 am #47121i always thought football was supposed to entertain –say anything you want about the pros and cons of martinez and if he will succeed or fail, but one thing is for sure there is not one person on that ground tonight -or come to think of it most of the games this season who can honestly hand on heart say they are not bored stiff by martinez’s negative formations and tactics.

Nail on the head LMB!

As you know, I like what Martinez had been trying to achieve, but that is down to personal preference.
I agree with what you’re saying about Jones and Barrow to a certain extent though, but don’t think it’s fair to include Martinez in that equation. Martinez was a classy player – albeit in lower leagues. Arsene Wenger had a modest career as a player, as did Jose Mourinho, however, they have always surrounded themselves with successful ex-footballers as coaches, who possibly also serve as advisors. So, you may have a point that if you’re trying to instil a ‘total football’ ethos, maybe the best people to have coaching them are not ex-players who have got Altrincham, Doncaster, Chester and Bury on their CVs.

23 September 2010 at 3:51 am #47127New Manager and 4 4 2… bingoThere are football managers all round the country at present clicking their fingers and saying ‘Damn it! 4-4-2. Why the hell didn’t I think of that?’
Yes, 4-4-2 cures all ills, is the key to success, and will bring world peace. It’s so easy. God bless you 4-4-2.

Yed bang against wall SW
23 September 2010 at 3:57 am #47129To be fair, the 2nd half was a massive improvement on the 1st.
Martinez at least did one thing right when he brought N’Zogbia on.
I had been having a go at Gomez all night, and praying for Moses to replace him, then he pops up with a belter of a goal. It won’t change my opinion of the useless pr&ck though.
We won, just about, against a poor Nob End side, Iam not booking my hotel room in that there London just yet.P.S. Martinez at last plays two up front, but then leaves out both wide man. The man is clueless at times.
P.P.S. Had Hendry Thomas actually kicked a football before he came to us.
I reckon he one of them imposters. One thing is for sure he is certainly not a footballer.23 September 2010 at 4:06 am #47130Anonymous
I would say that Mr Thomas is a footballer having represented his country a few times as for Jordi Gomez he has appeared three times this season and we have won three matches

Disagree imo Barrow,Jone’s were far better players for this club than Martinez,by a country mile!.23 September 2010 at 4:25 am #47133Disagree imo Barrow,Jone’s were far better players for this club than Martinez,by a country mile!.Yes, they were both known for their continental flair and regularly competed against Europe’s elite.
I didn’t dispute their quality within the level of football they played, or compare them against Martinez as a player. Re-read my post.
