Steve Bruce is planning another audacious swoop on former club Wigan with a £5million bid for left-back Maynor Figueroa.

Bruce has already upset former employer Dave Whelan with an £8m move for midfield linchpin Lee Cattermole and is now ready to test Wigan’s resolve again with a move for the highly-rated Honduran.

Wigan are reeling on the back of defeats by Manchester United and Blackpool and will be reluctant to sell but acknowledge every player has their price.

Manager Roberto Martinez, who is offloading Michael Brown to Portsmouth, is eager to bring in Ferrie Bodde from Swansea and Victor Moses from Crystal Palace but would face a desperate battle to find a suitable replacement for vastly-experienced 26-year-old Figueroa by Tuesday.

Since when did 40 Premiership games qualify you to be “vastly experienced” ?

Especially with Edman sat on the bench.

Yes, absolutely. Closely followed by Alan Rodgers.

I really can’t see the hype surrounding Figueroa. He’s solid enough, but he’s not that special, and I wouldn’t value him at £5 million.

                  You can see it now!

Steve Bruce: ‘I want Figgy. How much do you want for him Dave?’

Dave Whelan: ‘He’s not for sale’

                  SB: ‘£5m?’

DW: ‘Make it £3m over 10years with add-ons and you’ve got yourself a deal’

                  See ya Fig.

You missed the bit in the middle where Figgy’s agent goes to Whelan to inform him that his client his deeply unhappy, cannot settle in Wigan and would like to move to a climate closer to his Honduran habitat. Therefore, he would appreciate it very much if the Sunderland bid is taken seriously as it is Figgy’s dream move. Oh, or you could bump up his wages to about £60k per week and suddenly the weather in Wigan would seem acceptable after all.

Oh, here you go, here is a barrel for you to spread-eagle yourself over, Mr Whelan
