Obviously we are looking forward to the new season under Owen Coyle’s stewardsip and we’ll get behind him because we are all aware of the importance to the club of united, positive support in creating a crucial home advantage. The attached link however shows what might have been, it illustrates how badly injuries affected us and to my mind explains why Martinez couldn’t achieve safety once more on the backdrop of a continually reduced playing budget.

Need to consider too that those injuries were significantly weighted towards defenders.

Clicking through gives abit more “meat”:

Newcastle could afford to buy five new players in the winter transfer window – including Massadio Haïdara. That was enough to lift them out of trouble.

QPR, under Redknapp, signed six new players, but even they could not save QPR.

Wigan signed Espinoza and, on loan, Henriquez, Scharner and Robles. They loaned out Kiernan, Mustoe and Boselli and also Jones. Martinez faced an uphill task to keep Wigan in the Premier League.
