Lots of us moan about the system Bobby is trying to play and has been playing since he came to the club, but for me the key to our problems lie in midfield.
The 4-3-3 or 4-5-1 (depending on which way you look at it) revolves around the three central midfield players.
You clearly need a creative spark with an eye for goal playing just behind the front man (that could quite easily be Moses as far as I am concerned) and you need at least one proper defensive midfielder acting as the barrier between midfield and defence.
Our problem is that we are not playing the system correctly. Bobby, in my opinion is playing our best players in midfield because they are our best players, not sticking to what is going to work for the team.
I always thought Diame would be our Patrick Viera, but while I think he has real potential to be a great player, he doesn’t get stuck in to play that anchor role.
Then we have McCarthy. Again another great prospect but too young and not yet disciplined enough to play that holding role effectively.
Thomas is of course our poor man’s Claude Makele, but at least he knows what his job is and doesn’t go charging upfield without busting a gut to get back.
Perhaps Bobby, if he’s intent on playing this way and no other way, should put McArthur alongside Thomas and tell them both to play the holding role – many teams did this in the World Cup and had success. That then gives our five other offensive players the license to do what they want.
It’s time to stop thinking about how some of our talented players might feel if they are left out and start picking the team which is going to stop us leaking goals at an alarming rate.
Just a thought…………
26 August 2010 at 3:43 pm #44199If we play 2 holding midfielders does that not leave only 4 offensive players not 5? One of our biggest faults is that we dont look like scoring when were on top, this is because we dont get enough players up to support our lone centre forward.
26 August 2010 at 4:14 pm #44202You are right, it does leave four my maths is crap!
I think we created plenty of chances last season, we just didn’t take them, that’s why we bought Boselli.
We are far too open at the moment which is why I think we should play too holding players.
Besides it would also give a bit more protection if our full backs bomb forward.
26 August 2010 at 4:17 pm #44204I ust think he should play 4-4-2… A big man up front (Get Heskey back??) .. alongside Boselli.
26 August 2010 at 4:19 pm #44205I agree that we should at least try 4-4-2 with the players we have got and see how we get on, but has Bobby ever looked like deviating from his current system?
27 August 2010 at 2:34 am #44256The late great Brian Clough said ” you need good backroom staff and without them you will struggle ! ” This is the root of our problem and until it is addressed we will continue to struggle. The manager takes the rap whether he is happy with said staff or not. By that I mean if he is happy then he really is as bad as we suspect and if he aint happy he should be bold enough to confront the chairman about it ! Many managers have left clubs because they didnt get what they requested from their respective chairmen. I’m afraid in this cut throat crazy world of footy the manager is the scapegoat ! Step up to the plate Roberto or as they say round these parts ” Do one ! ”
