So far we’ve played the weaker teams and overall we’ve held our own (still annoyed by Bristol result) at this rate of 4 points every 3 games we’ll have 60 points and mid division finish, I’m hoping for a play off position myself, but deary me we need a class striker and no more midfielders.

Fuck the EFL
18 August 2016 at 2:17 am #150030Yep we’ve just been promoted and signed Jordi Gomez so we are a weaker team.

I view this season exactly the same as 2003-4. Mid table is the realistic ambition, but put a good run together and the play offs are achievable. At least Brian Deane’s retired
Anything else this season is a bonus. The big push is next season.

Wednesday & Norwich coming up soon so we’ll have a good idea of how good we are after these games as both of them will be there or there abouts.
With you on the striker issue!

19 August 2016 at 3:06 pm #150060Personally I don’t want to go up as I far enjoy the football more in the lower leagues and the days out.
As a club however we need to be in the Prem for at least a season and it probably needs to be next season with the parachutes drying up. There are already 3 ex Prem clubs with bursting bank balances and another 3 to come plus the likes of Wolves who have been taken over. A club like ours could get cur adrift.
Yes there is no guarantee money brings success but as we are always a selling club I don’t see us keeping a squad together for a few seasons if we do well but don’t go up.
19 August 2016 at 8:00 pm #150065I wouldn’t mind if we just did a Burnley and had one season up there in the Premier League, didnt spend then come back down very rich and go back up again. Trouble is now The Championship is away with big money and it may have to take a big gamble from our owners to finance this in the first place and like you say money spent would not guarantee a promotion.
Let’s just enjoy having a go and upsetting as many of these big spenders as possible.19 August 2016 at 10:11 pm #150067I wouldn’t mind if we just did a Burnley and had one season up there in the Premier League, didnt spend then come back down very rich and go back up again. Let’s just enjoy having a go and upsetting as many of these big spenders as possible.Fully agree. Up for a season, pay the bills and fund us for a few years off the tv dosh and then spend 2 or 3 years in the championship with some decent cup runs.
As a fan of a club like ours the Prem is crap.
19 August 2016 at 11:40 pm #150071I used to say that many years ago, before we ever dreamed of really getting in the PL, but Bolton were yo-yoing.
Be an established Championship club. Get promotion with big crowds and the good feeling of winning promotion.
Spend a year in the PL, with big crowds wanting to see the big names, and gather in the money.
Spend next year in the Championship – getting good crowds because of wins and promotion.
Repeat ad infinitum. Like Norwich seem to be doing at present.
Our problem actually was that we stayed too long in the PL. It became a boring struggle against the odds which we were never going to overcome.
19 August 2016 at 11:51 pm #150072And in the three seasons going into a fourth since we left that league the money involved is another ball game all together.
But who knows with the spirit high at the club and some canny signings anything can happen and remember it can be one hell of a pressure on a club when money is changing hands like it’s going out of fashion. Expectations from supporters can be ridiculous too. The Geordies for example can be amazing fans when things are going for them but are a fickle bunch when things aren’t.
We should just enjoy this season irrespective of position and who knows we may upset them all again.20 August 2016 at 12:34 am #150076Lets do what we do better than any other club in Britain, pissing off the so called big boys defying the odds and winning things despite being engulfed by the massive Scouse and Manc clubs. In other words lets just be Wigan Athletic the biggest little club in England. I wouldn’t swap what I have seen as a Latics fan for 50 seasons in the Prem.
