For the past week or so, I have been re-reading Ed Jones’ superb book, ‘Northern Soul’, which documents our first season in the Premiership.
In doing so, it really has ‘re-ignited’ my positivity and given me a ‘feel-good’ feeling. It is great to recall the buzz that was around the club, from top to bottom. The excitement that was constantly in the air. Honestly, I think it’s done me the world of good, and would no doubt do the same for many others who’s heads have been a bit ‘down’ of late.

Granted, that was 5 seasons ago, now. But to recall those initial days of us being in the Premiership has reminded me of how exhilerating it all was, initially, and I think that a lot of our fans could also do with going back through this book, and giving themselves a boost.

Honestly, ‘Northern Soul’, by Ed Jones. Cracking read the first time, and a cracking read this time, for entirely different reasons. I’m actually really excited about Wednesday, and I really think it will be the game when everything clicks.

Let’s all get behind the lads from the first minute to the last. Sing and shout our hearts out….positively, not getting on their backs at a displaced pass or something. Please, let’s get behind them like the Stoke fans got behind their team. And at the end of the day, if they can’t find motivation from this extra level of support, they will deserve much criticism AFTER the game.

This is it. Time to think positive, and really get behind them. Go into the ground thinking “We can do this, tonight!”, not bemoaning team selection, or whatever. (That really riled me at the Stoke game. Moaning before they had even come out!)
They say the old Kop at Liverpool used to ‘will’ the ball in the goal. I think that is true, to an extent. Not physically. But mentally. You have a few thousand fans all on YOUR side….by crikey, it must help, mustn’t it?

Pint-sized pop star Prince, had a song where he sang “Party like it’s 1999” or something, didn’t he? Well we need to support the team like it is 2005. And if we do, perhaps we will be in the mood for dancing? Because the players will be giving their all tonight.

      Let’s hope we ALL do.

VAT – A very good read. It provides good insight to the club and the players at the time. I was fascinated about Henri Camara and his shyness….you would think he was some sort of berty big bollocks. The Chimbonda stuff was also mentioned along with photo’s of Whelan looking like he was about to explode!!

Have you read the Whelan book yet?

No, the price has put me off, being honest. I’d like to read it, so I get a full background of how he is, and where he comes from. I bet it’s a good read. I will get it, eventually.

Ed Jones’ book has been like a ‘tonic’ though.

I think it is listed in the Library for loan.
