England v France at twickers will be good on Saturday. I hope Jonno and the boys do ’em.

Hopefully the 1700 Kick-off will mean that there will be a good crowd on the DW for the visit of arguably the most famous club in the world.

It would be awful if there were a few thousand empty seats due to a rugby fixture taking place!

Don’t think it will affect tomorrow’s gate just want it to overshadow the worriers game on Sunday. Any references to Rugby Union seem to give them a real bee in their bonnet.

QUOTE ‘….a local in my west London alehouse suggested to me that no-one would care whether Wigan won or not as people are too caught up in the Six Nations. I think that’s rubbish…’

Really ? This is a very naive and blinkered view.

That someone doesn’t care two hoots about Rugby League?
Or two hoots about a weird one off game between a small town in the north and a team they have never heard of?

How on earth can that be described as ‘rubbish’.
It’s the norm, no-one does really care, unless they live in the m62 corridor.

And it’s not a two way street at all between League and Union. Just because league happens to like Union and enjoy Chris Ashton’s exploits does not mean at all that the reverse is true or has to be true.
Fair play to the Wigan chairman for his comments, but he doesn’t speak for Union watchers. And just because he likes watching the 15 man game and his old player (whom he failed to hang onto of course) doesn’t mean the reverse is true at all.

That student of physicality that is Martin Johnson will of course be interested, but as much as he is in the conditioning of the San Francisco 49’ers and other impact sports. I didn’t see him beating a path to Rugby League even when he was an impoverished ‘amateur’ player. Does he attend League games now ? Maybe in disguise.

But let me suggest, if the man in the pub is talking ‘rubbish’, why not straw poll some of the 80,000 at Twickenham tomorrow as they leave the stadium and ascertain as to whether they will be watching the league game, or care, or could name the teams. I imagine you will get very few.

When Rugby league can build a world class 80,000 seater stadium on it’s own out of amateur profits, and fill it with regularity, then perhaps the codes MAY be judged as equal in popularity or with some parity. Until then, best not to term ‘rubbish’ the views that most of people (outside the northwest) agree with wholeheartedly.

Bottom line – in comparison to England France, hardly anyone cares.

Well said that mon

Of course it will overshadow Wigan v St George – the southern-bias media will always make sure of that.

I doubt that is the case in Wigan though, where Sunday’s game will be of far more importance to the town as a whole than any sporting event in the world this weekend.

I’d have more time for your point if we were actually allowed to post on the ‘cherry and shoites’ forum without it being deleted after 5 mins. But RL people are impossible. I tried being magnanimous with the few people who I know are interested in this so called rugby town but its a waste of time. Most of them will be watching from their locals anyway. Yawwwwwwwwwn !!

Are you talking about Wigan town or Preston, Chorley, Bolton etc (less than 60% of season tickets from Wigan – Latics 78%)

I’m really not interested in a willy waving contest as to how many ST holders come from wherever – merely pointing out a fact that in Wigan this weekend there will be far more interest in the WCC than either the 6 nations or Latics v Man Utd. Probably more interest than the numbers of those two combined.

                #60451

I suppose if you go in any given pub in the area then you’re probably right. But the majority population as a whole in Wigan probably don’t care about any of them. My local is full of armchair ultras who’ve never been since they closed Central Park. I may have a walk up and support an aussie team for only the second time in my life, the first being when they won the America’s Cup in 1983 off the cheating New York Yacht Club.

                  That’s just not true.

I’m afraid I have to admit there are lots and lots of “United fans” (albeit armchair fans) in Wigan to whom today’s result will be of far more interest than tomorrow’s egg-chasing. Not to mention Liverpool fans who wanted United to lose. Football has always been a stronger sport in Wigan – just not Latics. Don’t judge interest in football in the town by Latics’ attendances.

Have a look around when the World Cup is being played how many cars and pubs and houses are decorated with crosses of St George and then say that rugby league is number one sport in Wigan.

                  Changing the topic slightly.

How or who puts the flags across the top of the stadium for Rugby games? Just noticed the top of the stand is covered in ’em. :techie-hourglass:
